I do occasionally use the iceland 'takeaway' cartons they are often on offer - i normally buy the 'main course' and cook my own rice at home a good happy medium much cheaper than the take away but easier than cooking everything from scratch if you have had a really heavy day.

Just found this old thread c/o zizzpychick and now feel inspired to try and do more home made (or supermarket) versions of takeaways.

For those looking for an easy chow mein recipe this one is really good:

Just need a decent home made pizza recipe (using the breadmaker) and a curry and I'll be sorted.

Off now to eat my dinner :A

When only takeaway will do and we can only scrape up about a fiver - I send OH over to chinese and he gets a chow mein and some fried rice - meanwhile i cook some 'mayflower' curry sauce, chips in the deep fryer and if i have them some supermarket spring rolls. then we eat chinese style - everyone takes some of the dishes on offer in the middle of the table. It really is fun as we use chopsticks, red napkins and if we can push the boat out or the supermarket had any - fortune cookies!!!!
  • Im another who batch makes own curry and freezes it. I also keep a stock of naan breads in the freezer.

Hi all, back to raid the fountains of knowledge again!

I have a craving for a takeaway, am on a tight budget and know the money could be better spent elsewhere!

Does anyone have any good ideas for getting rid of the takeaway craving without actually having one....ie recreating things at home on the cheap?

Curry is not one of my faves although that would be simple....I have a pretty good storecupboard and have most things in.....any ideas appreciated!!

    Thanks :)

I could do, thanks for that :) ....the only thing is that you are talking to someone that ends up with a pile of gloop not rice after cooking....and everytime i've tried "fried rice" it ends up wet and sloppy!! Do you have a failsafe way of cooking?

I made salt and pepper chicken a couple of weeks ago for my son.

Diced onion really small, diced garlic (lots of), diced fresh red and green chillis and some rock salt.

Sauteed in some stir fry oil and then add chopped chicken.
