Even a hot & sour soup is easy peasy once you have the right ingredients in.

if you could share your recipe i would be enternally greatful! this is one chinese dish i just can't master, no matter how many recipes i've tried it's just never the same as the take-away/restaurant.

We rarely have a take away. However I like to cook Indian and Chinese food myself.A tip on buying spices. Most supermarkets sell those crumby little over priced jars of spices.I get mine at a fraction of the cost from Asian shops.Failing that,Morrisons do a good deal on basic spices. Also I see that the same shop is selling poppodoms at a decent price.

My favourite takeaway meal is the crispy duck (6 pancakes) and a quarter from my local is £6.99. I tried the Tesco's version the other week for £3.99 with 12 pancakes and I guess 1/2 a duck and it truly tasted no different to the takeaway version and was very good value. Tesco's finest satay sauce (crunchy peanut style) is the best I have ever tasted and far better than any I have ever made, even better than Nigel Slater's version who I normally love. The sauce with some chicken kebabs and some egg fried rice makes an amazing meal :). I do normally cook from scratch but I like to make a naughty lazy meal on a saturday.

Anyone know how to make that sauce that Dominos put in the middle of their pizzas when you get double decedance and the dominator base? It's cheese herb and garlic I think.
One day I might be more organised...........

Another thing to bear in mind is that takeaway portions tend to be quite large, and you could easily have 1 dish between 2 (or 2 between 3) especially if you have in a few easy extras to beef things up (eg a bag of poppadoms for indian, prawn crackers to chinese, garlic bread or salad for pizza). A chicken biryani for £4 betwen 2 of you is not a terrible amount to pay for an every now and again treat (and better for waistline too!)

My FIL used to make my MIL boil rice at home while he went out to get the meat bits of a chinese or indian takeaway as he said this took no effort, and was ready by the time he got back with the main bit of the meal, but I think that's taking things a bit far!

    Hi

I know everyone is moneysaving, but there comes a point where you do have to have a treat and let someone else do the cooking for a change!;)

How often during a month do you all have a takeaway or a meal out?

I would be interested to know. I have tried stopping them completely and think that might be a bit too strict.

  • We rarely have takeaway these days _ I would guess probably once every two or three months:cool:

I think it is because we know how to make quick easy meals so by the time we have called, waited and gone to collect (or it is delivered) we realised we could have actually cooked something ourselves. Of course there are times when you can't even be bothered to chop an onion, so that is when we get takeaway.

We have a ten month old daughter so meals out are quite rare too! I probably eat out once a month with friends and my DH the same. We probably get to eat out together once every three months:eek:

    What do you do?

    Hi overlykeensaver

We too don't eat out as we have 3 year old twins. We haven't been out since our wedding anniversary last September!!!!!!

We have been having a takeaway twice a month but I was trying to stop this to save money. The downside to stopping it, is that I have to cook every night of the month without any days off! OH doesn't cook apart from chips LOL.

We tend to eat out or have a takeaway once a month. This is either due to laziness  or just fancying not having to cook (and wash up in the case of going out).
