Thought things were going to well. this is a copy of the response from Samsung:
Dear Customer,
Your Serial number shows that this drive is part of a system manufacture (OEM product).
All drives sold as OEM products must be serviced/updated through system manufacture as their warranty superceeds Samsung.
We suggest that you contact your system manufacturer for further assistance.
Thank You for choosing Samsung.
Looks like I now have to contact DELL, but my warranty has now ended (but the warranty for the HDD is still valid)0 -
As already explained, the hd warranty will probably be 1 year, as it is an oem install, it's different if you bought the drive yourself, so pursue the soga angle if Dell are awkward - have known them to repair things out of warranty in the past without hassle.!!

Yep, things going downhill again. I will give Dell a call tonight .... any advice what I need to say ? or should I just cut my losses and buy myself a HD elsewhere ?0 -
absolutely no sympathy from the Dell customer service chap. In my best American voice he said "Thats one tough cookie". I tried to use the fact that the Samsung drive was still in warranty, the sales of goods act and even saying I believed it has failed the soga durability test. He wasnt interested and said that I should have taken out an extended warranty. As I could not find an email address for Dell to explain everything, I guess my next step is to use the Dell complaints email address now that I have a complaint after trying to resolve the matter ....... or should I just go out and buy another (more reliable) HD ?0

Ring again, you'll hopefully get someone else, say you expect it to last a few years without any problems, if they won't budge ask to speak to someone familiar with uk consumer law.!!

seems enterprise support are alot easier to work with than consumer in that case - enterprise dealt with another HDD issues for me today on an out of warranty unit.0

Email sent, although I will be suprised if i get a reply. The "American" call center were no use at all, dispite be trying to quote English consumer law and SOGA.
Got myself a WD hard drive now which has bigger capacity for less than £50 .... the nice man also installed windows 7 home premium which is a step up fromthe version I had, so almost a happy ending !
Thanks everyone for your comments and help0
