create recovery discs and or a full disk image of your hard disk if you don't have the reinstall disc and ask dell for a free one if you don't have one.

self bought hard disks come with longer warranties, but oem (pre-installed by manufacturer) bought ones don't, but that doesn't affect your rights under the sale of goods act, so you could call dell and say you expected it to last longer and it failed the soga durability test.

heat is often the cause of failure, are you blocking the vents?

Good news is the Samsung HDD is still under warranty:

    Warranty Checker

    S/N Model Warranty information
    Status In-wty Until Code Description
    S266J1PZ501*** HM641JI 101
    Component in system manufacturer

Code 100 This product is under warranty.
Code 101 This product is a component of a system (OEM).
Please contact the system's manufacturer for service.
    ===================================================
What it didnt say was when the warranty expires, so I better get a move on.
The checker gives a "continue" option after I have selected the HDD, but doesnt seem to recognise the "tick" so I have emailed them instead

Everything is backed up, just need to see what Samsung come back with now that I have made contact with them.
90% of the time the laptop is used on a table and I have not noticed it getting too hot !
If I get no joy with Samsung, I will go back to Dell and use the "sale of goods" act

    Thanks

    That is good news!
I've done this myself with a Samsung HDD , you get an RMA number , send the HDD back to them and you will get a replacement drive free of charge!

Doesn't the above state that the item is code 101, and that you need to contact the "system manufacturer", ie Dell? No harm in contacting Samsung but they may not reply very quickly, plus just repeat you need to contact Dell. So I would also contact Dell ASAP.

Usually replacements under RAM from hdd manufacturers , where relevant, take 2-3 weeks.

does everything is backed up include the operating system, programs and diagnostic/factory restore partition, which will all be gone if the HD fails completely. Use on tables can reduce cooling efficiency if the vents are on the bottom

I got the O/S and most of the progs. Spent all evening making sure I have all the essentials (including all passwords), so hopefully when the crash (if the crash) comes I will be ready ...... Anyone know if the SMART warning comes days or weeks before the actual failure .... and how does it know there will be a failure ?

A disk image does everything, programs and OS are impossible to backup properly otherwise.
