I regularly see secondhand beds offered free in my local paper, and as other people said, there's freecycle. Also, a local (to me) charity shop that sells furniture will deliver a secondhand bed free to needy cases-worth you asking around where you live.

Also ebay can be good for local pick up only items.
Got myself a mint condition george forman family sized grill for £4 the other month! bargain!

As others have said clean/repair the bed - you really don't want to increase your debt if you don't really need to.

I got my kids beds second hand from a local charity at a good price they were really good quality and looked barely used, very clean. Maybe the best place to look would be your local charities, a lot of them run schemes for people in need.

Also if you are on facebook, there are lots of for sale and for free groups for local areas on there.
