phone cold callers want me to prove who I am

I just had a phone call from some PPI claiming company.
He wanted me to confirm my date of birth and address.
I asked him why and he said it was so he could confirm I was who I said I was.
I told him he phoned me and if he wanted that info he wasn't getting it and if he thought I was a burglar to phone the police and hung up.
Brilliant! LOL. My phone provider keeps doing that ringing and asking me to prove who I am, its soooooo annoying!0 -

I have caller id and it is fantastic as you can see who is calling before you answer.
And if it is a cold call, if you answer them you will get more calls, if you don't answer you will get less calls. Tele-marketing priotrise on who answers/who buys.......0 -
TPS works well, some calls still get through. I am going to use the Crime Scene approach when my next unwanted call come in. Thanks Vax2002.0

A few months ago at work I managed to convince an indian telecoms caller that I didn't have a phone. He apologised and hung up.

I tell cold callers I am self employed and charge an initial fee of 50 quid plus 25 quid for every hour or part thereof. I then ask how much of my time they would like to purchase, and require a billing address so I can invoice them.I married my cousin. I had to...I don't have a sister.

:rotfl: thats Brilliant !!!
Was it an Indian telecoms caller called "Brian" or "Nigel" by any chance?? They are my favourites - "hello Mrs J... - my name is Brian"
"come now - its not is it...."
I get quite cross with the epople who ring me then ask me to confirm who I am - even more so when they get arsey with me for telling them that Im not going to be giving them any details over the phone and I couldnt care less if that means that the call will have to end...Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup0 -
I got a cold call from a company "representing vodafone" , they asked me for all sorts of details which i refused, then I asked him for his mothers maiden name, for some strange reason he started getting all shouty and upset!!Aha, so thats how you do a signature!0

If my land line rings, I pick it up but don't speak.
Anyone genuine will speak first, whereas cold callers use some auto dial thing that reacts to voice. No voice means it times out after a few seconds and I can go about my day knowing I haven't ignored a genuine call.
Try it, it feels odd to answer a phone without saying a word, but its strangly fascinating!0 -
I prefer to give them a riddle instead. See if they're worth their salt to be on the same phone line as me (which is what I tell them).
"I'm a four-digit number! My 2nd digit is twice greater than my 3rd. The sum of all my digits is thrice greater than my last digit! The product of my 3rd and 4th digits is 12 times greater than the ratio of my 2nd to 3rd. What am I?"
Answer: 7638.
You only ever get 3 responses;
1) Stop wasting my time - Which is when I go full blown into how they're wasting my time.
2) They hang up
3) Very rare, but some try and work it out
Only ever had one person know it, and it was someone from the Orange retention team and I ended up buying a phone from him, but he was an absolute lad.0
