I agree, fluffnutter. If the bike was damaged because of the fault on th bike rack, then you are entitled to be compensated by Halfords. Halfords can value the bike and do not need a receipt.

    sorry for the confusion
they want the receipt for the rack so they will pay for the bike repairs

they keep saying without the receipt there is nothing they can do

so im wondering what my options are before i go down there and camp on the front doors with my mangled bike...

    thanks for all the replies

So they were happy to repair the rack without the receipt, but are demanding the receipt (for the rack) before they will compensate you for (repair) the bike? Bizarre!

Try putting everything in writing to head office, loosing it in store won't help at all.

ok i could try that but im in contact with head office they are saying without a receipt im stuffed

when i say loose i i dont mean kill evryone on site just go down there with the bike and rack and refuse to move until someone sorts it out whilst informing the customer about what happened with the halfords rack

I think I'd concentrate on the illogicality of their argument. Why are they prepared to admit liability and fix the rack without a receipt, yet require it in order to recompense you for the bike damage? The first action necessarily means that they've acknowledged they sold you the rack (which is, after all, what the receipt is for). By their own actions they've deemed the receipt an irrelevancy.

..I took the rack to halfords who said the rack was faulty and replaced a new rubber. I have a signed statement from the store stating this.

Did you sign the statement as well ?

What does the signed statement say exactly ? (i.e. Does it state that, if they repair it, that you will not make any further claims ?)

Going forward - do you have an independant quote (better with 2 or more if possible) for the repair of the bicycle ?

And is all this in writing ?

Deal in WRITING so you have a full audit trail of what has been said !

Interesting them admitting the rack was faulty, was it roof or rear mounted, if rear mounted the bike cannot fall off if properly secured with the red straps.
