Hmmmm....Possibly your sig and your references to being a postman?
Just a thought.
Oh and the word you are looking for is 'dictionary'. 'Can' and 'may' are interchangable in this context.
how many Posties work for the Post Office?
wouldnt a thesaurus be more apt?
anyway you seem to be fluffing, perhaps you should go back and look at real world examples of where unpaid overtime can get people0 -
A lot of people do a little extra to get something finsihed and don't get paid overtime to do so. eg: my company has a meeting (which is irrelavent to my role) which is supposed to start at 16.00 and finish at 16.30 latest. Most often this meeting doesn't start until 16.25 and finish at 17.00 - I finish work at 16.30 as I start at 08.30 and don't get this extra half an hour paid nor get the time back, I get into the office at 08.00 - not through choice but to get parked but I now do not go straight to my desk. This I know is slightly different but at another company when I had a piece of work that needed to be completed for a meeting the following morning I would work extra to get it done - again more often than not - unpaid, but so saying one company I worked for didn't therefore mind if I took a little extra for lunch.
I think that your OH is being taken for a ride, I think that they need to have a word with their supervisior or HR and say that they don't mind helping out occasionaly if there is a real need but when they are doing x amount of unpaid overtime. There has to also be some work-life balance and it sounds like they don't have that. It sounds like they know that they are a soft touch and will always say oh okay I will do it. How about they try just once say no sorry I have an appointment or other plans and can't do it.0 -
4 extra hours a week!? ...And yes, that's the problem, in order to go higher, she will have to kill herself without guarantee of a better position.
Seriously, if she is so close to the edge that working an extra 4 hours per week is going to kill her, then she really needs to find an easier job as a matter of urgency - regardless of whether or not she is paid for the extra 4 hours.
Perhaps it would be worth asking for demotion back down a level? Maybe that way she will even get her overtime paid.0 -
I'm in the same role as your friend, and i found the best way to play it, is to keep your manager on there toes, if its important like we have a visit from regional or someone is out sick then i will stay as long as im needed to make sure everything is ship shape in my department, but if its just been a busy day and its jobs that need doing but can be pick up by the next shift i'm out the door bang on time. There is no pattern to my overtime as it depends on how i feel

The only way you will progress in retail is to move around departments so you know all the roles, it can be like pulling teeth to get a manager to release someone thats effectively holding a department together, doing to much can have an adverse effect on moving up.0 -

Royal mail, Post office whatever....look up 'pedant' in that thesaurus of yours whilst you are at it.
I write this from my office outside of which my Assistant has just kindly gone to get me an afternoon coffee - I don't need to look too far for those real world examples...Go round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger0 -

its quite a large difference despite your whatever, why dont you just refer to it as the GPO?
perhaps you could spend less time looking good to the boss doing 'free' overtime with a bit less net time in working hours0 -
