  • It is the big S...And your situation will highly depend on your manager(more if you work in the smaller shops)

Maybe there is a supermarket manager reading the post, and could correct me if wrong...But aren't they giving a budget? and then their BONUSES, will depend on whether they stay within budget??? and if they even go below budget....so 2+2...

All I'm saying is that this situation should be regulated to stop this kind of abuse!!!

NMW in London--> nope but if you take into account the cost of living, travelling, etc, etc you will probably be better off claiming benefits

now that seems harsh, but on reflection I have probably worked 15 hours unpaid overtime every week for almost 25 years, difference being always on a FT contract.

EDIT: supermarkets are dreadful organisations, they squeeze suppliers, staff, but then that's a whole other debate!

I got paid to work 25 hours a week, but I always had to work an extra 15 hours unpaid every week for over a year. The company wanted me to come in and do the accounts on my day off, as they changed the processing day,I refused to work any more unpaid hours. Guess what, I was made redundant and haven't worked in 3 years.

how long where you working there???

this is exactly what happens when it is not regulated...and wooorst, it seems that these are not isolated incidents...we are definitely going backwards!!!

I think you keep missing the point - it isn't going backwards because it was never anywhere else. You have just been very fortunate if you haven't experienced or come across this before.

no no,surely the company recognised all that unpaid work and devotion to the company
allowing you to move up in the business

    how would you regulate it?

Also its a minority of companies that do this, don't think that it is the majority...

use bonuses to get managers to keep staff/operating costs down?
nearly every job i have been in has had them

Company was a bad company but that person made the mistake of not moving on, instead they stood up for their rights (quite rightly so...) with no back up.

but they worked all those unpaid hours
so where did it get them in the company?
they worked there for a year proving their worth by doing those extra hours
so what's the time scale on how long you work unpaid hours for recognition and reward?

No, I meant force employees to do extra work unpaid. We always pay our staff but I have had to get the staffing levels down but thankfully only had to do it by natural wasteage and stopping all overtime.

Ive worked in many jobs where its the norm
the whole catering industry functions on unpaid overtime
if you don't do it then you wont be working
cutting staff costs by stopping OT begs the question why was OT required in the first place?
have you reduced productivity to match?
  • if she doesn't already, she could keep a record of her extra hours for reference, in case she needs a favour back etc.

agree with others re. if you want to do well etc then you try to help out - it helps your colleagues and customers etc.

also, can she see if a different way of working could help to improve things. is everybody in the team pulling their weight equally?

how is she viewed at work by her team/colleagues/manager etc?

does she actually like her job - is she proud of what she does? is it actually stressful or affecting her health?

the word you are looking for is may
i have never worked at the Post Office so I have no idea where that is relevant, nor why you have decided it is my only experience of the big bad world of work

Hmmmm....Possibly your sig and your references to being a postman?

    Just a thought.

Oh and the word you are looking for is 'dictionary'. 'Can' and 'may' are interchangable in this context.
