    I spent the first 18 years of my life in York (lived in Haxby) on doctor's row (5 of the local doctors lived on our street) always great when your local consultant couldn't tell you were pregnant at 29 weeks :rotfl:(but that's another tale)

    In seriousness my auntie lives in Huntington (very nice esp the old village, good schools.) Parents Haxby, all friends Wigginton or Haxby.

    Dunnington has a good rep but I find the traffic into York horrendous.

    Elvington is a nice village 6 miles from York traditional pub, friendly atmosphere my grandma lived there.

    A good friend lives in Osbaldwick and loves it she has 3 kids at the local school and they are thriving.

    Fulford nice but some bits V studenty.

    I would avoid Acomb, Tanghall, Bell farm, kingsway always had a poor reputation. We now live 35 miles away but visit frequently

  • Personally I wouldn't bother with Harrogate as houses are more expensive than York AND you would have to commute. Garforth to York isn't cheap on the train but would it be free for a train driver? You have to watch it with the catchment areas for Garforth school as it is so popular.
  • Thanks everyone for all of your very helpful ideas and suggestions!

    DH shifts are probably going to be quite irregular, but he has a motorbike that I assume will make it slightly easier to commute into York on!

    We cannot get over how great most of the schools are in the area around York, especially in Garforth. Thank you to whoever suggested that area (sorry, can't remember names!) but some of the other areas are totally worth considering too. So much choice! Something that is sadly lacking in the area we live now where our nearest 3 primary schools are all in special measures. :eek:

    Am going to have a look with DH tonight at areas around and see what sort of commute he is willing to do, although he has said that he will put up with most things to get the children into a great school!

    For the kind poster that also asked what I want from the move north, I just want my children to have the best education that is possible in an area where we all feel safe. I am currently training to be a family history researcher and would like to work for myself at some point in the future, something I think would be fairly easy to do in Yorkshire and especially being close to York!

    Any more suggestions please feel free to offer!! I will keep you up to date and may need some more detailed information about certain areas soon!

    Thanks again

    I'm sure that Garforth is a Leeds postcode, which I think will almost certainly put your insurance costs up. Might be worth playing around with quotes on comparison sites to get an idea. You also pay slightly cheaper water rates in York compared to the rest of Yorkshire - a perk from when York had its own water company!
  • Garforth is probably the best secondary in Leeds but York has much much much better schools than Leeds.

    No way would anyone chose Garforth over York for schools.

    Agreed - though this is my last comment on this particular bit: in principle I agree with you and that's why I originally suggested they look at suburbs (such as Fulford - or even Dringhouses), then her hubby can just cycle to the station (what a luxury !!) :)

    We agree :beer::beer::j
