I love living in Garforth. Very good local schools. The academy rates as one of the best schools in the Leeds area. Good high street with most shops covered. Lots of families locally with plenty going on. Good choice of properties with 4 estate agents on high street. Garforth station is 20-25 mins or so from York station, there is also a second station East Garforth for stopping services. Smaller villages outside town would probably look at Barwick in Elmet or Aberford, although both have less facilities. Prices for 3 or 4 bed would be around your budget. Leeds is 15 mins the other way by train.

I agree with the above posts. Most of its accommodation is within the outer ring road (A64 to the south, A1237 to the north). There are some ex-council estate streets which you really wouldn't want to live on; as previously said, that's parts of Clifton (off Burton Stone Lane / Kingsway North), Tang Hall (just east of Heworth out towards the Uni) and parts of Acomb (Chapelfields estate / Foxwood).

Buses are pretty good but can be caught up in traffic on certain routes. The one thing you will need to consider with your OH working at the station, assuming he'll be working shifts, is how he will get to the station at the start and end of those shifts. I don't know how early / late the Harrogate railway line (runs through Poppleton) trains are. Buses in York - again it depends on the routes. Once you've got a better idea about possible areas, we can advise better. I don't think there is much staff parking at the station, and parking nearby is expensive. P&R doesn't run late. If possible, I'd say consider cycling from an area such as Rawcliffe.

As for schools, York has universally good schools ratings so you really don't need to worry there.

£250K isn't going to buy you many 4-bed detached houses though, I'm afraid, unless you do go further out, although again some are quite pricey.

i live in york, just off the A59, our house looks out over the fields and its a lovely area. its a 3 mile trip into the centre of town for us. or we could go to poppleton and get the train into york, or do what a lot of people do and that's cycle

i wouldn't think about malton - the A64 can be a nightmare as its not dual carriageway all the way. the A59 from harrogate is a horrendous road at rush hour.

my kids went here and its a fab school http://www.mce.york.sch.uk/

york is very small and compact, come and visit us and have a good nosy around and see what you think

i would avoid kingsway (near clifton), tang hall, chapelfields and bell farm, but like others have said in comparison with other cities they're not too bad.

this is a link to our local newspaper http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/

pm me if you want more info

  • Haxby is nice (apart from an outbreak of nasty plastic windowitis); I'm surprised it's so affordable.

Depending on the shifts / booking on times then public transport or rush hour delays may not be an issue.

If you go East, you're looking at the YORK to HULL train line (pretty dire service I've been told - but I may be wrong?) Most people I know who live to the East of York use their car and then the Park & Ride (so you get to sit in the rush hour traffic in a bus instead of a car :( )

The train line between York and Hull was removed so the trains now run via Selby and then along the humber and take forever which is the main problem and it put us off going East out of York certainly.

  • If you want York schools don't worry too much about the primary.

York has a very simple secondary school catchment where it really is defined basically where you live (which road). This is unlike any other large town in tne area. So I would decide which secondary you want and then look at houses from there.

This may change as they become academies though.

Somewhere on a train line so that your husband can give up commuting.

For example, to the West of York, the YORK to HARROGATE train stops at:

    Poppleton
    Hammerton
    Cattal
    Knaresborough
    Starbeck
    Harrogate

Some of these places will have their own primary schools, and then would easy for your husband to get to York station easily.

    :)

I've just looked at the railway timetable for the Harrogate to York line.

Going from Poppleton to York, the first train of the day doesn't arrive at York until 07:22 (07:21 on Saturday, 12:07 on Sunday), and the last train arrives in York at 21:47.

Going back from York to Poppleton, the first train leaves York at 06:52, and the last train of the day leaves at 22:11 (21:57 on Saturday, 21:26 on Sunday).

Have a careful look at what your OH's shifts are going to be like, as you may not be able to rely on trains all the time. As I previously said, local or P&R buses are unlikely to fill that gap and there is limited or no parking at the station for staff.

I would see that as MOST of the time he would be able to catch a train, but anything out of those hours would still need a car (or maybe a car and a bike ??) Nearest public car park would probably be The Esplanade - £2 to park from 6pm until 8 a.m. the next day) or free to York residents).

Yes, Esplanade would be closest - although not sure whether Poppleton residents are eligible for a Minster badge. I don't think that Copmanthorpe residents are, for example.

But Esplanade only works if the entire shift is during the off-peak free hours. My recollection of train shifts from a good friend's husband is that this will be rare. There will be some which are indeed fully during the hours of the railway timetable, but others will be split in parking hours / transport availability e.g. 3pm - 11pm.

So you either a) take the car and pay lots of money to park for several hours in a car park near the station, so that you can drive home after public transport has ended; or b) take public transport in, and have to get a taxi home because the shift ends after buses / trains are running (or are hourly ... ).

Anyway, this is getting way off topic. Hope the OP is having fun looking at different houses online, and we can all offer better suggestions when areas are narrowed down a little! :D
