Areas around York?

Hi All,

We have the possibility of DH being offered a job in York.

Can anyone from that area recommend good areas that are commutable to the centre of York in about 30-45 mins?

Good primary schools are a must and we would like similar to what we have here so 3/4 bedrooms, semi detached or preferably detached, maximum budget of £250k.

I would like a project house but the location has to be right!

Any ideas or thoughts welcome!

Many Thanks

  • York is a lovely place to live...

However, I found that commuting into York can take 30 minutes even if you live in York! So it depends where exactly work place is?

We quite like Woodthorpe area when we lived there but this was a coule of years ago - so someone may be able to give you more up to date info.

With regards to schools im not sure myself but know many teachers in York school (primary and secondary) so ould be willing to offer advice once you have an area in mind...

    Good Luck!

Wow, lucky you, York is my favourite place in England. Lovely, lovely place to live.

There are Park and Rides all around York and lots of bus lanes so commuting shouldnt really be a problem.

    Good Luck
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I currently live in Selby, a town 15 miles south of York. I work in the south east corner of the city and on a normal morning it can take 30-40 minutes to get in. As wayneski100 said if we lived in the city on the other side it would take just as long to get to work. We're currently trying to sell and move within walking/cycling distance of work and nearer the voluntary stuff we do in the evenings and at weekends as the drive is no longer working for us but it's not the area itself that we don't like. We've got a station with direct trains to London, Leeds and Manchester, 3 supermarkets and a good range of other shops but I don't have children so can't comment on schools.

Price wise in the south east corner of York certainly you're looking at 200K-250K getting you a 3 bed semi but you get University competition there - I've not been looking that much at other areas as we know where we want to move to when/if we can sell our house!

If you want any tips/any further information about realistic travel times if you do start to look/anything about a location very happy to try and help, I've lived and worked in or near York for 10 years now!

  • Thanks for the replies so far, very helpful.

DH is a train driver so would be based at York Station. Currently commutes into London and the journey seems like it will take as long into York!!

Any ideas on areas that are on the rail network which are possible? Malton, Harrogate etc. We are in Essex at the moment so difficult to go have a look ourselves!

    Thanks for all the help

The Yorkshire Wolds around Malton are still one of England's hidden treasures. Plenty of villages to choose from, but village life can be quiet and remote - heavy snowfall is not unheard of.

There are also plenty of properties within walking/cycling distance of York railway station - it does depend what sort of lifestyle you want.
  • £250k is not a massive budget to live in such a lovely city, although some areas you should be able to get a 3-bed detached if you look north of the city such as Haxby.

You could look south to Bishopthorpe too, a lovely little gem on the river with the Archbishops palace and 2 great schools. 30 mins on the bus to York station, about the same on a bike.

The further south you go (towards Selby) or East (towards Hull) the cheaper housing gets although you do get a lot of area snobbery North of York (Flaxton etc) as you get closer to the hills.

Edit: if you want to live really close to the city £250k will get you a 3-bed terraced house 5 minutes walk from the train station just off Bootham and near to one of the best (private) schools in the city (St Peters).
    Thinking critically since 1996....

If you're looking to live outside of York and your DH commute into York by train there are several options:

There are lots of villages/small towns on the line from Leeds to York e.g. Garforth, Church Fenton, Micklefield, and on the York to Harrogate line too.

Selby is about 25 minutes by train into York too, they stop at Church Fenton and Sherburn in Elmet.

Parking costs at York station are really high (about £12 a day, although I don't know if there is any staff parking) so if you want to live in York I'd look at walking/cycling distance of the city centre, where you won't find many semi-detached homes, or on a bus route.

If he needs to get to the station living in one of the surrounding villages/towns seems a viable option, for us to get the train to work is a 10/15 minute walk then a 25 minute train journey into York which would be ok but then we'd need to get out to the south east corner and that's 20 minutes on the bus in rush hour which is why we currently stick to driving.

I guess the most important thing is if you'd like a town or village or want to be in York itself, also think about where else you might need to get to, if you have family down south etc. All our family is near London or further south so we went for Selby with a direct train line to London and on the correct side of York for driving down when we moved there. If we went to the north it would add to our journey times even more.

  • Harrogate is a lovely town to live in, although very expensive.

  • Thanks for all this information!

We would prefer to be in a village away from the actual city if possible. Where we live now is soooo busy its just crazy and we want to get away from that pressure that living in the South East creates!

    All really helpful, Many Thanks

I grew up in Wigginton - which is technically a village, but it's merged with Haxby which is a town (ie house A on a street can be in Wigginton, and house B next door on same street can be in Haxby). It's a really nice, safe place to live, and whilst not cheap, should be able to get something in that budget range. Has at least two primary schools, and then access via bus to two secondary schools (Joseph Rowntree, Huntington).

There are 2 bus routes in (12 and 1 from First), both are regular services, albeit pricey. At peak times will take upto an hour to get to York station. Less at other times, and likely less by car. York is a nice place to live, but avoid town centre on race days ;)

Areas I would personally avoid are Clifton and Tang Hall. Although compared to a lot of cities they probably seem tame.

    Hope that helps! :)
Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.
