First Direct's cover is not the greatest, however surprisingly they do not cancel after a write off, they will however require you to pay the remaining instalments in one go or they will deduct the remaining instalments from your claims settlement.

FD's claims service is often very slow, so I would recommend you keep on top of them and do not assume that something is happening if there is a long gap between communications. A good trick is to be polite and friendly and get the name of whoever is dealing with your claim and then keep politely nudging them.

It is very important that you take a copy of any documents you send them and post them by recorded delivery as they have a habit of losing documents you send them. If you send them any documents, check on they have received them here https://www.royalmail.com/portal/sme/track?catId=62200738&mediaId=63900708 and then ring them in the afternoon or late the next morning to make sure they have recieved them and are actioning them.

As mentioned before have a good read of the link from the Ombudsman as you will find it helpful, do not be surprised if the person you are speaking to is not aware of the Ombudsmans rules. If they are refer them to the relevant rule

It sounds like a write off to me. Do you have pictures?
We all like to see pictures of smashed up cars here. Oh, and it'll help us decide whether it's actually a write off or not, too. :D
  • ok well i paid my insurance in full anyway so thats not a problem. does that mean if i have to get a new car that they will just continue the insurance and i shoudl only have to pay for the difference because the car is different etc?

and yes i know theyre useless had enough trouble at the beginning trying to get them to make my details correct. i dont think i will be using them again!

and thank you i will keep a track of everything and keep on top of them. i have the ombudsman page saved in my favourites thank you
  • haha no i forgot to take pictures i was in shock, never had a crash before and its my pride and joy! i will be majorly upset if its written off!

Shame! Btw, if you go to https://www.copart.co.uk and search Fiesta's you can see what level an insurer will write a car off at; if your car is in a worse state than the cars on there then sadly you probably have your answer about what is going to happen to it! You may even see your car end up on there!
