How to resist spending?

Comments

  • If you look at a few other posts of mine you will know why I am a bit tight off atm.

How would I manage not spending a penny (apart from board n stuff) between now and november first. Everytime I go somewhere i end up buying something

    any advice?

The best advice is to leave your purse at home and just take enough pennies to feed yourself.
  • Also - consider siphonining off the bulk of your money into a non touchable (ie harder to access, harder to get to) account.

For spending just carry a few pounds with you and that is it.

Also consider picking up some other hobbies e.g. reading, tennis, swimming, jogging.

    Good luck also !

    Freeze your cards.
You probably didn't mean this literally, but I read a suggestion somewhere that freezing your card in a block of ice can help resist temptation.

By the time you've hacked it out, or waited for the ice to melt, you're often not interested in buying whatever it was you wanted to.
  • Just don't take spare cash or any card with you. Its difficult to start with but you will get used to it.

... and stop walking past shops you know you cannot resist.

I think it'd be better to keep walking past them - right past them without stopping ;)

A small trick to save money is any credit card that is due to expire in a few months is to cut it up now. Then you will not be able to spend until the new card arrives.

Seriously? you need some backbone. To help you, translate prices into hours worked for your disposable income. Suppose you make £1/hour in disposable income. When you're tempted to buy a treat for £20 ask yourself if you're really prepared to work for 20 hours (2.5 working days!) to get it.

Unfortunately your problem is more deep routed than just using "avoiding" tricks. It's like trying to loose weight. You need to focus on a life style change where your activities are not going into shops or spending on enjoying yourself. Think about all those organizations ripping you off with overpriced products or the banks charges which with some effort can be avoided. Try getting something you want that's really needed a bit cheaper.

    Thanks for your time.
  • It's all up to you, even if you can't avoid to go on shopping stores, or any other centers, just think of how much money you are spending and how much you are saving. Know when to stop.

Stay out of shops and use cash only.
