My Mac's mouse has two buttons, a left and a right one. Some Mac mice don't and only give you the left button (in which case you get the right button functionality by pressing a keyboard key too). Non-Apple mice can give the 2-buttons functionality.

You drag a window on Windows using the title bar, just like you do on a Mac.

You highlight text for cut&paste by dragging the mouse over it left button pressed, just like on a Mac. On a Mac you could use Command-X/C/V for cut/copy/paste, and on Windows (and other OSes) you use Control-X/C/V.

My whole reason for asking was to know how to operate the damn thing on my lap, without using a mouse.

That was badly setup - no reason you cant Skype from Mac to Windows to Linux to Android to BSD to Symbian to ChromeOS or any other OS which has Skype available.

Just a hunch - perhaps the Mac (a G5 or whatever) didn't have a microphone built in?
