Mac to PC - some basic help needed, please.

Options
Hving used a mac for years, we have just bought a PC laptop, so that we can skype and see new grandson in the Us.

Having trouble with somethings, so have to ask:

a) how can I highlight a section of print in order to copy text?

b) how do I drag window aside so that I can see more than one window open at a time?

c) why two 'mouse' buttons? What does each do?

These are probably idiot questions, which will give you a laugh, but I;m stuck.

you can use skype on a mac just download it from the skype website

the same as on a mac just click and drag right click on the highlighted text and click copy or keyboard short cut Ctrl + C

    b) how do I drag window aside so that I can see more than one window open at a time?
exactly the same as a mac but with the top status bar (on the same level as the close button) just click on a free space and drag if you ahve windows 7 you can drag it al the way to the edge and it will 'snap' into place

    c) why two 'mouse' buttons? What does each do?
the same reason macs have a right click function ie it gives you a contextual menu

These are probably idiot questions, which will give you a laugh, but I;m stuck.

    Pardon?

Of course I'm serious! A PC laptop is a very different beast to a mac desktop.

I have downloaded Skype and are well away with that.

I have been able to highlight and copy whole texts - practising on poems - can't do sections, though.

The mac doesn't have a 'right click' - only one button.

Going to 'Forum jump' on this site will only give me a down arrow too. had to get here via convoluted route.

Oh, are you not using a mouse? If so, your problems are due to a horrible laptop imitation mouse rather than then operating system being Windows.

Buy a proper mouse, and use that instead of the trackpad. Plugging in a mouse is the first thing I do with any new laptop, I hate hate hate trackpads.

To drag items with a trackpad, left click and hold on item, then drag using trackpad.

Not really. They're pretty much identical. You could probably have installed Windows on your Mac and avoided buying new laptop

You bought a new laptop just to use Skype?

    Uh, ok.

I'm on a mac at the minute and I'm very confused...

I've definately got a right mouse button - a left and a right, both on the trackpad and on the mouse. Both work, the same as I'd expect with a Mac. Copying and pasting is click-and-drag, the same as with a computer, but you need to hold Ctrl and right click to get the menu up and be able to copy. Ctrl + C is much easier on a PC, but it's the same basic process.
  • Yeah on a mac by default it only has 'One' Button but in options you can set it up for 2. On a trackpad on the mac you need both fingers on it to bring up the options menu (or Right mouse button equivalent on Windows)

However there is a Skype Mac option which is now on a beta version which is actually probably better then the windows version - The new one has built in Facebook integration as well.

How did you use a Mac for years without using Ctrl+click? All modern Macs have a 2 button mouse, but the right click is not enabled by default.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Do you know, I wish I'd never asked! Feel patronised.

We had skype on the mac - but as DS uses a PC, sound was incompatible.

We bought a laptop as present mac is just coming up to its 7th birthday. I would prefer DS to convert to a mac.

I learned on a Classic, changed to a beautiful green imac, then to this G5. None has ever had two buttons on a mouse.

I used a mac for years using apple key and click.

Thank you to posters who treated my request kindly.

Don't feel bad, it was just hard to tell if you were winding us up. The last time I saw a one button mouse was in 1990 :)

Left click mouse usually is the main button, used to select or highlight. Generally the right click opens up a 'context menu', i.e. a menu with options relevant to whatever you are doing.
