To return to the original questions...

    a) At least one person on here has said BR and a Prison Service job are fine. If you are still concerned make an anonymous call to the HR department and ask them. I did as a teacher and found that County Hall were very understanding about why I was calling anonymously.

    b) Many of the rules have changed about what jobs people can and can't have when BR. The amount of people going BR has increased due to a variety of factors and a lot of the stigma is going. I think the previous poster was a little too aggressive in tone but I must echo their sentiments. If you do not know something as a FACT please do not present it as such. What you have heard, what you believe and so on is perfectly acceptable but unless you absolutely know for sure please DO NOT present them as fact.

It was very much the case that BR was a block to many jobs in the past but it isn't always the case.

I would advise EVERYONE, no matter what their job, to call your HR department anonymously and ask before assuming.

    I hope this helps.

If I can go bankrupt in UK while living in Spain...do I have to tell my present employer? Ironically I´m working in a department chasing debt.

I have trouble getting my head around the discharged bankrupt bit - are you still classed as a bankrupt if applying for jobs or does the discharge mean you are not anymore?

I want to go into NHS management eventually should I remain well, would I be able to be a chief exec?

I think its terible how you are classed almost like a criminal as most of us have just been unfortunate and life has a funny way of turning out. We all make mistakes yet bankruptcy must rate up there with child abuse for the stigma and restrictions it imposes. those who judge have no idea just what a difficult decision it is too make and how it restricts the rest of your life....there but for the grace of god go I and all that

This all makes me laugh about being a 'security risk' and like I am the bogeyman because I severed myself from overwhelming debts.

I have no debts anymore, therefore have no reason to steal any money.

And as for the charity thing HA! Indirectly, I raised over £6000 for a cancer charity earlier this year, and almost £4000 for a childrens charity. No-one asked if I was a bankrupt, and I knew but by disclosing it, the hand wringing would start. So I simply got on with the fund raising. They are £10,000 richer - I have carried on raising awareness for causes that are important to me.

    Tsk. This life eh?

I am a police officer and I saw an article in Police Life magazine this month, written by an ex police officer who know runs a debt management agency targetted at serving police officers. This full page article was about how to go bankrupt!

So I am confused, can we or can't we... Not that I intend to, but I was puzzled by this article being in a police magazine

    Hi everyone,

Some very interesting and informative comments.

I was wondering, I went bankrupt in May 2008, so the bankruptcy ended in May 2009. I am considering applying to the Police Force, but from what I can gather it's unlikely I'll get through because of my bankruptcy; is this right? Will I not be given the chance to explain my reasons for bankruptcy? As I have very valid reasons, none of which are dodgy at all.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers :)

  • A friend of mine is a Gangmaster. When he renewed his license one of the questions was if he was a bankrupt. So would being BR, discharged or not affect his license? The GLA want to establish whether you are 'Fit & Proper'.
  • Hello,

I am going BR in July, I am also looking around at various Admin jobs, are there professions that I cant work for ? Finance for example....

    Thanks :)
