What small car - 5k to spend

  • I need to replace my ageing (52 reg) car, it's MOT & service are due in the next few weeks and the exhaust is noisy so I'm probably looking at at least £400 to get it through it's MOT including the service - that's without problems that are currently unknown to me that might mean an MOT failure. The car is probably worth £1000 on a good day so firstly what sort of part-exchange figure could I expect. I know it would vary according to the car they are trying to sell but a ballpark figure would be good.

    So, my criteria are:

As new as possible (to take advantage of remaining warranty)
As low emissions as possible - for cheap car tax and cheaper council parking permit (must be below 120g CO2 for permit).

My maximum budget is 5k. The cars in the running so far are: Toyato Aygo, Citroen C1, Peugeot 107 (have read that those three are essentially the same car) and old shape Kia Picanto. Any other suggestions?

I would prefer to part-exchange my old car so probably looking at dealers rather than private sales although if a private sale would be a better deal I could look into selling mine privately although not sure how attractive it would be to buyers with only 6 weeks MOT left and with a service due!

    Any thoughts welcomed :)
my stilo is a similar age, did you have to sort the anti roll bar and suspension at 50k?
Who remembers when X Factor was just Roman suncream?

My current mileage is only 42k, not had any issues but not even sure what the anti roll bar does and how I would know if it needed replacing!
  • not even sure what the anti roll bar does

Its a bit like Ronseal ;)
  • I owned a Peugot 107 for 3 years and loved it, its like a pocket rocket!! I couldn't face another 107 after my daughter wrote it off in an accident so I drove nearly every small car there is on the market even the Aygo and C1 even though they are essentially the same car as the 107. The Hyiundi i10 was a nice drive, comfortable and good mpg but the reviews on the internet by other drivers put me off. The Pixo and the Alto both felt cheap, tinny and I didn't like the drive. I liked the Fiat Panda especially the diesel version it had lots of storage and a nice drive. In the end I bought a new shape KA, (I had the old shape KA before the 107) In the end I plumped for a KA it has a far superior feel, look, comfort then any of the small cars, I get 50.5mpg and I drive 40 mile a day round trip to work. Its has a fab stereo as well. However the KA is a 1.3 four cylinder car and the Peugot 107 is a 998 cc 3 cylinder car very different drives the KA doesn't launch it self from the traffic lights like the 107 did but I prefer the big car feel to the KA and I find it makes me drive more sedately (something I do when I drive big cars, don't know why!) Hope this helps you make a decision and makes sense as I've had a few glasses of wine!!:rotfl::beer:

    Goodluck and happy hunting

The Kia 7 year warranty transfers to subsequent owners automatically.
Someone needs to let their advertising company know unless they're only restricting it on certain models.

If you read the small print you may find it isn't transferrable. It certainly says on the Kia adverts on TV that the 7 year warranty only applies to the first owner and isn't transferrable so once its sold by the first owner the warranty dies.

What advert do you think you've seen it mentioned on? As I just posted on the other thread - the Kia website says the warranty is fully trasferrable to the new owner.
    6. Can I transfer the warranty to the next owner when I sell my car?
Yes - the Kia 7 year warranty is fully transferable to any subsequent owner of the vehicle while still valid.

I have a Picanto, albeit the outgoing model, and that's correct regarding the warranty :) (hence the high residuals of Picanto after the warranty was introduced - I have a GFV of £2700 on a £5500 car with predicted value actually being higher than this)

they go around 50k, when you go over a bump instead of a bit of a squeak occasionally it will sound like a band of drummers playing on steel saucepans have been locked in your boot

the sensible thing to do with a stilo is find
    1. a good motor factor
    2. a good independent garage
    3. fiatforum's stilo board's search facility :rotfl:

the battlebus will soldier on for plenty longer if you do those things, trust me :D

  • Thanks for all the input, I'm soon to be the proud owner of an Hyundai i10 - 1.2 engine, air-con as standard, £20 a year tax. It's a pre-reg (10 day old) showroom model - £7055 which I think is a pretty good deal (hope so anyway!).
