  • A tablespoon of pesto is nice stirred into mash, or a dollop of salad cream, gives it a bit of a kick.

When i make Shepherds Pie i usually mash carrot and swede in with the potato for the topping, tastes great and gets extra veg in sneakily for kids lol

Brilliant, some great recipes to try.... although im a bit annoyed that you have all being having exciting mash without telling me! :rotfl:

Being a northern lass, we were brought up on a huge plate of boiled mash, cooked in the pressure for a good twenty mins!

Some of the best mash I have ever had was when a friend of mine made some mash to go with the sausages and beans we were having. She put quite a bit of butter in it and some milk. Then to finish off a little bit of salt and black pepper. Very calorific but so tasty.

Carrot and/or swede goes really nice in mash. Also I think cheesy mash is lovely.
    Mash with spring onions.

the important thing when it comes to making fancy mash is to make sure that your bog standard plain mash is top banana BEFORE you go adding all the extras into it.

    really good mash:

*needs the right type of potato

*should be boiled until soft - dont overboil, they go watery

    * mashed with a generous splash of milk,a big knob of butter/marg and a lot of elbow grease until a light, creamy consistancy is achieved

*if you have weak arms :p use a blender/hand whisk to achieve the light consistancy

*adding dairylea gives a subtle cheese taste and also helps make very creamy mash

Some great ideas here - yum! :D

I like to mix in some caramelised onions, cooked slowly in butter.

A half-and-half mix of normal potato and sweet potato is really nice, again with a bit of butter or a sloosh of olive oil. I also do the same with celeriac.

Another simple idea is to switch the variety of potato you use (but always check that the kind you choose are suitable for mashing). King Edwards are my favourite - and I think they have a noticeably different flavour and texture to other varieties I've tried.

My kids love "spotty tata" - A basic mash with peas and salad cream in - it's lovely cold with a salad and was always a treat when I was little.
