Mash, boring mash!!!

I used to buy ready made mash from M&S, then I realised how much money I could save by making it myself. I try to use the best Maris Piper potato and mash in milk and butter to give a bit of taste, but invariably the mash tastes very bland - how can I improve the texture and taste?
Any hints and tips on how you make your mash gratefully appreciated - I have no objecting to adding veggies or whatever, just please pass on your experience.0 -

Peas
Courgettes and/or Swede (well Boiled)
Food Colouring (Gets the kids laughing)
I now whizz my mash in the food processor, it means I do not have to add milk then, just the butter and if I whizz in the white veg, then no one knows they are there, but like the taste!!!0 -

A spoonful of wholegrain mustard - yummy! The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0

My mash tends to be potatoes, double cream or sour cream (whatever is in), a little natural yoghurt, salt, pepper and plenty of grated mature cheddar thrown in.
If I'm feeling adventurous (this translates as: "if any of these were reduced to 10p in Asda") I chuck in chives/chopped spring onion/cabbage, and then pop it into an ovenproof dish, cover with more cheese and bake.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
Hi fallen121,
We have a fairly recent thread on making mash more exciting, so I'll merge your thread into it as it helps to keep all the suggestions together. As always posts are listed in date order, so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

In a bid to get more veggies into my daughter I mixed in some roasted butternut squash - it had been reduced, I threw it into the oven when I was roasting a chicken and had been frozen unti I figured out what to do with it. Was very pleasantly surprised. You don't want too much as it's quite sweet-tasting, but she loved it and works well as a topping for cottage pie/shepards pie etc for gorwn-ups too. Lots of vitamins!0
