Thanks Queenie :) - I thought it was about time I stopped lurking...

I was reminded last night about a dish we used to eat all the time when I was in Halls - Mash with Chilli and lemon, just the usual mash with milk and add a good shake of Sweet Chilli Sauce and a couple of teaspoons of lemon juice. Very very nice with fish.
Pre O/S: what's a vitamin? Does it begin with the letter e?Now: I'm not eating any of that pre-made rubbish...

    Hi everyone.

A couple of weeks back I went to a very posh resturaunt and the mash they served was delighful. It was something like mashed potato mixed with stilton and chives. It looked gorgeous on the plate with its specks of green in it (im not sure whether they had mashed with the skins on as there were a few colours)

Anyway I was serving out Sunday lunch and decided I want to make my mash more exciting so wondered what other people did with theirs?

I have mashed garlic and chive into it before but its certainly wasnt has heavenly as at the resturaunt.... what secrets do they have???

We love cheese and bacon mash - cut bacon into small pieces, fry until crispy add to mashed pot with some cheese. Got this idea from Chilli's restaurant.

Also want to try mashed pot with Garlic Boursin stirred in.

Looking forward to the other replies as dont like plain mash myself.

Soft fried leeks are good in mash with butter and black pepper.

I mash turnip or swede in too, but keep it quite lumpy.

It's nice with a scraping of nutmeg, especially if you add some root veg too.

For the children, a little grated cheese, peanut butter and sesame seeds seems to go down well (even mashed into little patties and fried.)

I like mash done with the skin still on too.

    Hi.

Mash with pesto is good, as is mash with olive oil. Mash with nutmeg and an egg yolk is lovely and rich, but you would have to be careful if serving it to pregnant women / kids etc 'cus' of the uncooked egg.
I've got a potato ricer and they make nice mash - I actually peel the spuds first as I find it gets too messy if I don't but it does make lump free mash every time.
BTW- love the idea of mash with Boursin - you can make it with dairy lee cheese spread for kids too!

I mash it with parsnip, butter, milk and thyme. Even a friend who doesn't normally like mashed potato said he likes it.

    My favourites are

Champ: scallions brought to the boil in milk added to the mashed potatoes with lots of butter

Mustard mash: stir in a tablespoon of wholegrain mustard, two tablespoons of double cream and a large knob of butter. Add some chives just before serving.

There are lots of mash ideas on this older thread:
