Sim cards for Broadband

Just about to get a Haewei 586 MI-FI dongle on 3, but wanted to know if I can use an ordinary mobile phone card in it? the price plans for braodband are not as good the normal phone PAYG sims, i.e for £15 a month I can get all you can eat data or the one plan for £25 a month, whereas the PAYG Broadband gives me just 1gb for £10 and 3gb for £21.

It may initially work but expect it to suddenly stop working when their system notices that you are not using it in a handset.

  • I remember on click they said that the one play allows tethering currently, so I would see no problem with using it in the way you have described.

    Wrong.

Tethering is totally different to putting the mobile SIM into a broadband dongle.

  • You could always just buy a cheap android phone then and setup wifi tethering instead of a MiFi.
  • It is just more convenient to have a seperate dongle, my wife has the one plan and a HTC which we can tether from, but her phone is then tied up, I cannot see what they discriminate against using a phone sim, thethering is effectively using it as a dongle.

so will it work or not? or will it be turned off at some point?, having said that, if its PAYG sim card and its on the £15 all you can eat data, surely it will take them more than a month to spot it , by which time its time to top up again

Each device has a unique IMEI number and they can tell from this what type of device the SIM is being used in. They never used to check this but they do now!

  • Personally I can't see there been much of a difference between using a MiFi and a phone, but other people do.

You have shown that your knowledge on this subject is zilch, so why advise others!

Why do you think that they charge a different rate for data on these SIMS?

Not doubting you at all, but there are a hell of lot of numbers to check up on
  • Just looking on amazon and you can get 3gb of preloaded data for £11.85, seems pretty good to me or 1gb for £5.99
