You also can not do this for a car you do not own!

If you can not do it for a car you don't own, does that mean you can do it for a car you don't own, or you can't do it for a car you do own?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

No you can't, even the Police can not check if it has insurance unless they are with the car and the owner.

The original answer was the right one, contact the council but if the car is taxed and not causing an obstruction or offence (double yellows, blocking dropped kerb etc) it has every right to be parked on the road.

Oh gawd its the P C Police :p

Sorry I caught you in a bad mood.

I had kindof assumed they would ask for data that proved it was your car (or at least check your identity in some way), or maybe log your first enquiry and bar any further reg numbers from the same pooter.

Turns out it doesn't do any of those things, despite the lengthy terms & conditons and regulatory warnings!
  • Doesn't have to be on a public road... We had an old car dumped in the car park at the block of flats I used to live in. Didn't take long for someone to report it as it soon had a "POLICE AWARE" sticker on it and then disappeared a little while later.

Google "abandoned car xyz council" (xyz = your town) and you should find the number to call.

On my council's page it says:
"Please ensure that the vehicle you are about to report does not have a valid tax disk. Colchester Borough Council cannot remove vehicles that are legally on the road. Any issues regarding obstructions etc must be referred to your local police station."

No mention of insurance! So looks like with my council we could just report a car that doesn't have valid road tax.

My council's form also has an option to report it anonymously. Though if it's parked outside your house it will probably be fairly obvious who reported it. :)

The point being when you report it to the Police and say its not insured why are they going to take your word?

As i said the Police can not check to see if it is insured unless they are with the car and the driver, you can break data protection as much as you want but its not going to suddenly make the Police fire up the quattro and send a tac team down with a helicopter for backup to remove the car.

They will tell you to call the council who have the responsibility to remove the car but given its taxed and not causing an obstruction its more parked than abandoned.

  • Tell the council you think you can see what looks like an arm visible in the boot, that ought to get them out quickly.
