If BG tell you that you need a new boiler, tell them that you'll need to get a couple of other quotes rather than just go for them - and then get local plumbers in for a second opinion and/or quote (perhaps the person who serviced it for a start?).

Something went wrong with our hot water system within the first couple of weeks or so of moving in. Thankfully it was just a part which needed replacing and nowt major! We still also have a ceiling light that won't work (am sure they must've known about that!), plus we can only get a signal for one telly still. It'll take forever to get ourselves sorted (been in over 5 months!).

At least if you get it replaced now, it'll probably be more efficient and save you a fortune on your bills ;)

I know there's no advice anyone can give, and nothing I can do...but I needed a rant!

We just bought our new house. We only moved in on Saturday and on Wednesday (yesterday) the boiler broke down. It just won't turn on, not a peep out of it, nothing. We have no hot water or heating just in time for our first weekend in the house.

Got a British Gas engineer coming this morning (hopefully!) to look at it and we are hoping against hope that it will be something simple that can be easily fixed...but it's not likely. When looking through the various appliance instructions etc that the vendors left for us in a box, we found the form from when they had the boiler serviced this May, and on it has been written that they recommend that the system is replaced (which obviously they didn't follow up as they were moving out)

Obviously I knew owning your own house was expensive but in the first week?!?!?! AAARRRGGHHH!!!!!!!

I think you got off lightly. I've been in my new house 19 days. In that time, we found that the roof was in allot worse state than we were led to believe and within 2 days of raining weather, it was leaking into our bedroom (we had to put a bowl under it).

The spotlights in the kitchen keep blowing. The last bulb we replaced lasted two days. A sure sign of defective wiring somewhere.

None of the doors upstairs close...at all.

The understairs light doesnt seem to be connected to an actual switch that we can find...annoying but not desperate I know.

The plumbings a little funny in places, so we have next to no hot water pressure off the boiler...running a bath takes 15 minutes.

The stove igniter stopped working after day 3 so we're down to using matches or lighters to light it.

And finally...apparently the back door warps in the rain and it wont lock...

  • Don't worry too much about British Gas. We got through two local plumbers who claimed to have fixed an intermittent fault with our boiler (it would stop working for days at a time and then randomly work for a few days), charging us between them around £250 to repair it. Eventually we took out a British Gas policy where they repaired our boiler and then we paid to have it serviced etc annually but we paid for it monthly. British Gas bloke immediately knew what the problem was based on our description and repaired it straight away. It has been going strong for the last 5 years without a glitch and is now 17 years old. If it wasn't for the British Gas bloke we would have replaced it 5 years ago.

If you buy in Scotland, there's typically 7-10 days during which any major failure of systems in the home - electricity, gas, plumbing have to be paid for by the seller.

Take it the OP bought in E&W?
  • may be an idea to get a quote off british gas before going ahead. then get a local plumber!!!!!

What has a survey got to do with the boiler? We could SEE the boiler was old when we looked round the house. We expected to have to replace it within a year. Didn't stop us buying it.
