thanks for the responses, the cam belt is in place and fine, as this was inspected by the rac guy when he looked at the engine.
My worry is because of the lack of oilwhen i was forced to break this may have swilled what little oil there was in the engine around causing vital parts to be exposed.
Doesn't sound like he was a very clued up RAC man , the petrol Mondeo has a timing chain , maybe he was looking at the auxillary belt that drives the water pump , air con , alternator etc ?
What is happening with the little red light in the clock ? does it go out or flash etc when you turn the ignition on ? do you have another key you could try ?
Oh , the low oil is possibly due to the oil being burned because of stuck or broken oil control piston rings , these are known for it , loads have failed mots on blue smoke / emissions.0 -

The oil pressure light won't go out on a car until the engine starts, so thats perfectly normal for any car, go outside and try yours.
The OP hasn't confirmed exactly how much oil is in the car, that would help a diagnosis here firstly.
I suspect from experience that the car not starting isn't an oil related issue at all. By virtue of the fact that the engine turns over means it has oil in it to some degree, it has to or it will seize. SO the engine not starting is NOT related to a lack of oil, it has to be fuel or spark.
On all my cars the oil light goes out on cranking if the engine doesn't start, so that doesn't seem right.
I'd put more oil in first though, if it needs it.
Petrol engine needs fuel, spark, and compression, but again, unless all the rings are gone, there's not much else to go without seizing it that'll lose compression on all cylinders.0 -

I suppose it depends how long it's cranked for actually, tends to vary from car to car, but yes I suppose do it for long enough and it will eventually go out on most cars. But either way, thats not going to prevent the car from starting.0 -
i know from looking at the dipstick there was very little oil in the engine.0

This could be anything. You need to go back to basics.
Is there compression in each cylinder?
Is there a spark at each cylinder?
Is there fuel getting to each cylinder?
If you don't have the ability to do it yourself, you need to find a friend who does or take it to a garage.0 -

You would get more help if you provided more detailed information.
Did you wipe and re-insert the dipstick? Where on the dipstick was the oil level?

It was due for an oil change as the red oild light kept comming on.
