just to update you all,
went into our local PO where we purchased the tax disc no questions asked. Whether this was because he recognised me (I go in there alot) or because we both stood there at the time I dont know but no mention was made of the different insurance/registered keeper.Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais0 -
Glad you got it resolved OP.
Just out of interest, why did you not take up the suggestion, to tax it online, made in the first reply to your original post?
You appear to have not even noticed that that post was made.0 -

I'm not that surprised. I have bought tax for my wife's car on several occasions, despite not being the registered keeper. I think they did ask if I am the husband though.
I think some PO staff must take a common sense approach if you are taxing a spouse's car.0 -

I can't speak for the OP, but I use the local PO rather than online because I don't want the village PO to shut.0 -
A few years ago I went to tax a car in the Post office in Castleford, the woman retorts have you driven this car on the road before you have taxed it.
I replied the information you require is on the declaration portion of the form .
Well I dont believe you she said, you have vauxhall keys in your hand, do you realise I could have you arrested.
Well red rag bull time.
No you can not
yes I can
Liar
Sorry
no you can not.
RIGHT and on the phone she gets
Dont worry I said, I will wait here...
Up come two police officers, she shows them the form, they ask about these Keys, I show them, Yes they are vauxhall keys they say.
Never said they arnt..
Ok they said where is the car,
Over here, dont forget the form I said,
Ok they asked for the form
we walked to the car, officer puts the keys in, his eagle eyed scout says this car is already taxed, why are you trying to tax a car twice.
The post office woman has now arrived and is stood smirking arms crossed at me.
I am not trying to tax it twice.
Cop looks at the form, this is a different car.
BINGO I say.
So why have we been called.
Because I say that silly woman over there wants you to arrest me.
Why ?
i explained and said I told her the declaration had been filled in.
Who's car is this
My wifes and yes I am insured to drive it as a named driver...
Ohh dear very sorry sir.
Then turns to the post office woman.. We have come from a traffic collision for this, he told you he had filled in the form.
If you ever waste our time like this again, I will arrest someone. YOU, he was not happy.
Talk about wiping the smile of her face.
Just went elsewhere for the tax.
Why they can not just do what they are supposed to do ?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Because we were paying for it in cash, today's visit was hubbys day off and we were on the way to the bank to pay the money in so we were able to do it online, we thought we would have one last go for easeBow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais0 -
All that needs to be shown is the reminder for the car to be taxed, a valid insurance certificate covering the car to be taxed and an MOT certificate if the car needs it. It doesn't matter if the name of the policy holder on the insurance certificate is not the same as the registered keeper. The woman in the post office was wrong."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

The Post Office are good at spouting utter rubbish when it comes to taxing cars - I'd have just went to a different branch / member of staff0

How to tax in the disabled tax class for the first time
Use your exemption certificate with your full vehicle registration certificate (V5C), insurance certificate and MOT certificate (if applicable) to tax by post or in person at a Post Office® branch that issues tax discs. See sections, 'Tax at a Post Office® branch or by post', 'Get a refund on your old tax disc' and 'More useful links' below.
If you have just bought the vehicle and have a new keeper supplement (V5C/2), you can use this with your exemption certificate to tax by post or in person at your nearest DVLA local office. See ‘Tax with a new keeper supplement (V5C/2)’ below.0
