Car tax and car ownership

I am the registered keeper of our family car but it is insured and driven by my husband. He has taken the tax renewal reminder to the PO to get a new tax disc to be told he cant as the name of the registered owner differs to the name on the insurance policy - she also told him he is not actually insured at all as he isnt the owner. (I bought the tax disc last year when it was purchased)
He is now fuming at me as he has been driving it for a year like this, and has wasted a trip to get it taxed.
Is the PO lady correct ? any idea what are next move should be ?
Thanks for any opinions !

She is not correct, he has insurance in his name to drive your car. There is nothing wrong with that. Next move. Tax it online.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

A vehicle licence can only be taken out by the registered keeper, and they must have insurance and MOT for that vehicle
so the Post Office were correct if the insurance certificate didn't cover the registered keeper.

However, there is no requirement for the registered keeper to be insurance policyholder, that would be a matter for the T&Cs of the insurance company.0 -

What you need to be is the registered owner which is not necessarily the same as the Keeper, who is the person who has responsibility for the car.Truth always poses doubts & questions. I know the DVLC keep & maintain the list of registered keepers but who keeps & maintains this register of owners?0 -
ok, im confused
Rover driver,
You are saying that i have to have insurance for a car I never intend to drive ? in order to get a tax disc for it ?
The tax disc itself only relates to the car, there is no mention on it of who owns the car so what difference does it make who purchases that tax ? (the link you provided takes me to an error)Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais0 -
Under the new insurance/tax rules, if you are the registered KEEPER of the car (on the V5 logbook) then you have to insure it or complete a SORN declaration.
I would register the vehicle in your other halfs name, problem solved."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
Thats annoying as I spoke to the insurance company who said it didnt matter who was the registered keeper as long as the driver was insured !Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais0

When it is a husband/wife they sometimes relax it a little as the spouse does have a financial (insurable) interest in making sure they drive the car properly and maintain it.
It can be very difficult for a non-partner or relative to insure a car they are not the registered keeper of.
The V5 doc does say the registered keeper my not be the legal owner. This is because the car could be on finance or previously stolen so in those cases the keeper isn't actually the owner. Does that make sense?
As above though, get hubby to register it in his name and problem solved.
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

Ownership has nothing to do with it, it is the registered keeper that is responsible, and only a registered keeper - or someone on their behalf - can take out a licence - and there has to be insurance to cover that registered keeper.
Sorry about the link, try:

If the vehicle meets the insurance requirements, which may or may not involve the registered keeper, it will comply with the new regulations. The registered keeper only commits an offence if it doesn't.0
