You do it your way, (I think I understood your post)
My way has worked for about 20 years for us, so we'll stick to that.

    Likewise.

I just don't see the point in making life hard for yourself that's all.

This silly Post Office woman has caused grief which could have been avoided. There is potential to avoid further issues in the future, it is free and won't make a jot of difference to the sale value of the car so bar the cost of a stamp, I don't see why it shouldn't be done.

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • If you are named drivers on each other's certificates, it's not a problem - there only has to be an insurance connection to the registered keeper, they don't have to be the policy holder.
  • If the insurance states the Reg Number of the car then there is no problem and the woman got it v. wrong.

If the insurance states 'drive any vehicle owned by the policyholder' then she is correct not issuing the tax BUT she could/should of explained what to do. You as registrated keeper need to give verbal or written confirmation that while you are the keeper, hubby is the owner.

    He's not the owner though.
Like me, he just drives her car.

If he put any money towards it, I would say he is the owner/co-owner.

    Ha, are you married?
  • he is the full owner, he purchased it but was working when it needed collecting. The only way around it was to get it taxed/insured during open hours and then collect it after hours. As i took it to be taxed I got in a muddle and took advice of the PO lady (can you see a pattern forming ;)) who told me i needed to sign as the registered keeper and get the form sent off.

The insurance documents have all the car details on it, as ive stated im not named on there as I wont be driving it.

I'd suggest making a different post office your local.
  • I was at the local DVLA office a few weeks ago and they turned away anyone trying to tax a car that was
    not registered to them.

People were told they needed to change the log book details or have the owner on the policy. I presume named would be OK?

So is a new thing? I was surprised at the amount of people turned away for this reason.

One of my neighbours was told the same at the local post office. I was under the impression that even with the new rules the Registered Keeper (RK) was still only responsible for ensuring that the vehicle is taxed, insured and MOT'd but it seems now that some places are taking it as the RK (or owner) shall actually do it.

I've had no trouble taxing our cars but to get the best insurance price we've ended up with this:
1st Car: Owner, RK and insurance policy all in my name with my wife as a named driver.

2nd Car: Owner is my wife, I am the RK and the insurance policy is in my name with my wife as the main driver and me as a named driver.

3rd Car: I am the owner and RK but the insurance policy in my wife's name with me as the main driver and my wife as a named driver.

So having the owner or RK at least as a named driver seems to be the key but there will always be a jobsworth somewhere.
