Sparky and plumber don't potentially have they keys to your house.

Maybe not, but by letting them in your home your still exposed to some type of risk. Many people also leave builders or decorators alone in their homes (although I wouldn't) which carries obvious risks, probably greater than that of a locksmith.

I'm just surprised that's something you would check for to be honest and where/what profession it would end in terms checking they have had a CRB done.

Also, somebody could have a criminal record from their teenage years or have turned their life around, gained some qualifications and now earning an honest living -- so infact a CRB check is more counter productive to society as people are unlikely to choose them to do work even though they may well be as honest as any other person.
  • Mikey72, I dont want to get into a handbag fight with you but, Why obviously ?
You need to go back and gen up on this.

I along with plenty of other locksmiths are CRB checked. This has little to do with coming into contact with vulnerable people, altough it helps.
Not being checked sometimes limits the jobs I can go too (company policies atc) and organisations I belong to. Also some of the sensitive information and training wont be available to those without the check.

CRB is not the be all and end all, but without it, where do you start.

There are many security "experts" used by watchdog and the like for both home and auto scenarios, that are former criminals of burglary and car theft crimes, as experts in their illegal chosen field theyve turned it around to a legitimate way.
Not saying a crb is a bad thing for certain scenarios, but id rather a former criminal who can get in my house/ car with no/minimal damage and now "proper training" and experience for a reasonable fee than a weekend course locksmith with a crb and a drill...
I know ponsaloti does not fall into the drill catagory, unfortunatley many national company locksmiths do...

A locksmith DOES NOT NEED the keys to your House, he would not be a very good locksmith if he did...

    buy cheap buy twice.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right
  • So this thread goes from a question around a locksmith providing a different service than was expected, to "Count yourself lucky that he doesn't come back when you're asleep and fiddle with your kids!".

    I love this forum :)

CRB is also irrelevant for your job to be honest. It's just a sop.

  • As said earlier,it may be irrelevent to you me old fruit, but not to me.

I asked a few relavent questions and tried to give free, truthfull advice but it seems to have touched a few nerves.

Anyway, more to the point, what is sob ?

a sop is something to placate someone.
I work with CRB checks all the time and they are irrelevant to your job, unless you babysit as you work. No tradesman should be working unsupervised when unattended vulnerable adults or kids are there.
If you wish to get a print out from the police station or police HQ (for a few quid) which shows your police record that is enough for you to say police checked if you wish.

For you and your like to selfishly clog up the system so carers and health and education professionals can not get on with their jobs because they are waiting for paperwork delayed partly because of the likes of you is just selfish.

    OK old fruit!

Just so I understand, CRB checks re only for healthcare workers and education professionals then (maybe so in your world).
I best go out and tell everyone else to stop it . How very dare they.

As for clogging up the system , every time I and others go for this check, it cost us about £55 with no cost to the health service. in fact the health service benifits from this. But you would know that wouldnt you.
You will also know that going to directly to the police was done away with in england a few years ago. It all has to go thru an agency.

You aint gonna get me to go under the stairs and get me handbag out.

Enough said on the subject from me.
    Good luck.
