Ok I have been doing this for several hours now and can't even get all the way around once. is it because I am using a dolly thing that is too small or what?

I used to french knit as a child - I was lucky enough to get a second hand dolly with a face :j

As I remember the wool dangles down the middle of the dolly and use a slip knot for the first pin then wrap the wool around each of the remaining three pins - then do the same again above the slip knotted pin so now there are two little circles of wool on that pin. I'm sure I used to have a little crochet hook which was then used to pull the bottom circle over the top, then continue onto the next pin and repeat until the tail is long enough - to finish - thread the wool through the last hoop to make another slip knot.

The finished product were definitely round and like a cat's tail though.

I want to try some out now :o

I've used French knitting as braid to go at the bottom of a net curtain, I also used a double row at the top of a pelmet curtain.
  • This is a great youtube link. She makes it so easy, brings back happy memories! and this would be easier to carry around to do a bit now and again.

The principle is the same though. I used to use a cotton bobbin with 4 nails hammered in around the centre hole, so you can imaging how close they were

Exactly, Gracie, that is what I remember too! My Dad would make them up whenever we wanted. And we used all my Mum's leftover wool and made - I think - little mats, and egg cosies. I still have those old type of bobbins, I might just have another go just for old times sake........ :-)

if you customise clothing, its perfect. The possibilities are endless.

that's a very good link, brings back memories for me too :)

I had a look at some others this afternoon & they were so complicated or badly put together you'd never figure out how to do it

I'm sure when Reverb comes back & sees it she'll be up & running in no time

We used to make egg cosies with the braid - 40-odd years ago. Does anyone still use egg cosies?
