Need to scrap my car, but do not want to be fined by the dvla

I need to scrap my car, although there are loads of companies and websites offering to do this how do you pick the good from the bad?

There are many horror stories of people having their car collected, being paid, but then a few months later getiing fines, parking tickets etc through the post. Also heard of car being taken for scrap, dvla not told then the owner being fined.

Does anyone know of any reliable websites who pay well for scrap cars without the risk of later fines?

I've used http://www.cartakeback.com/ as have several other forum members. No problems getting a certificate of destruction and a decent price paid. I tried looking up the car's tax status on http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/ after a few days and it came back with "unrecognised registration number" or something similar.

You are only bound by DVLA rules whilst you are registered to them.
You can write at any time informing them you are no longer the registered keeper, they will write back informing you that the records have been updated.
A keeper is the person responsible to abide by the rules, it is a contract of implied consent.
You would need to remove registration marks and store the vehicle of road on private land and never take it back on to a road or you would be committing an offence.

Can you not just send the logbook off with the new keepers details? The name & address of the company collecting the car.

What they do with it is upto them, Scrap, Break or Sell. Doesnt matter to you as long as you get paid.

If they fail to notify the DVLA of destruction or SORN it then its not your problem, The car will be in their name anyway.

    Or am i missing something?

Essentially, you can't just scrap it, you have to take it to, or have it collected by, an 'authorised treatment facility'. They will give you a Certificate of Destruction (free) and you need to send this, along with your V5 or covering letter, to the DVLA. They will not accept that the vehicle is scrapped without the certificate.

Where on that link does it tell you to send the CoD to the DVLA? It just says "They’ll also tell DVLA that you’re no longer responsible for the vehicle. Keep the certificate as proof that the vehicle has been destroyed and you’re no longer responsible for it." - which is exactly what happened when I scrapped my car.

    You are correct. It doesn't

My info was based on a phone call to the DVLA last year asking about the procedure for scrapping a car.

i drove my car to the local scrapyard, they went straight on their PC and filled in the online scrap form on DVLA page there and then, printed me out my copy, gave me my cash - all done.

  • I always used to take old cars to the local scrapyard, and get money and sign the forms there and then.
