I think that in the coming decade, the popularity of the combi will fade and we will migrate to optimum volume pressurised storage fed by HE conventional or system boilers. Its better for the environment, better for your bills, better for maintenance costs and better for the consumer.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • I agree with the comments from BlueMoonMole - it sounds as though your boiler wasn't installed well in the first place. As it's 8 years old now, it's a question of the cost to repair versus the cost to replace. I would get at least 3 RGE quotes - in terms of the Glowworm boiler you have got, they are good mid-priced range - I have fitted 2 ultracoms recently as one customer saw it in the which? report and then recommended it to a friend. I was surprised how well built and easy to install they are. Good luck!

thanks Energyman - I've had 3 quotes for repair, all of which come in at over £400. No guarantee that that will actually cure it, and whether something else will crop up further down the line. Regarding a new one, I am loathe to get another glowworm after the nightmare we've had, although I know that they're now owned and manufactured by vaillant. Will have a think.

Entirely likely that the boiler wasn't fitted properly - we're in a new build property and I think everything was done on the cheap. It's only since we came in that things have actually been looked after / serviced etc but too late!

You don't need to take out a contract with Bg, you can take out a fixed price repair which is tiered in price up to a maximum of around 400. Read the t&c's as it covers all parts required, labour, vat and a guarantee to fix with a guarantee for 12 months after....other firms may offer a similar deal.
I've got a glow-worm ultracom2 and really like it, but have never had to repair it yet as it's never broken down.

Ultracom 2, launched around June 2010.
All singing, all dancing, Clearly Hybrid compatible superstar.

Almost a shame to put it into a bog standard house,
without even an outdoor sensor to activate weather compensation.
  • I've keep hearing more good things about the Glowworm Ultracom2 boilers - reliable, easy to fit , satisfied customers, decent price - not often you get all at once!
