should I get our boiler repaired or bite the bullet and buy a new one?

I repair 50+ Heating Systems a week.
Your boiler, a Glow-worm, is a mid-range boiler, and it sounds as if it wasn't installed very well.
If you've had to have a Powerflush, on a boiler that is 8 years old, something isn't right. And sticking a new boiler in its place, at a cost of £1500 will NOT solve your problems.
It all depends what you want, really...
Are you planning on staying in this property? or moving on?
Is a new boiler an investment, long term, or a knee-jerk reaction to another repair cost?
Personally, and professionally, your choice of Boiler Care Cover shows your distinct lack of consideration for your system altogether.

Er, what?? Firstly, you know absolutely NOTHING about my circumstances other than what I've posted above so to make assumptions about my 'choice' or value judgments about my 'distinct lack of consideration' is offensive. I shouldn't have to outline my personal circumstances in order to ask for assistance about a specific issue from a (usually friendly) online forum.
Secondly, I've explained the options available to me, and I'm asking for a proper considered response as to which one I should chose, rather than requesting a slagging off for being cheap and not paying for your company's services.
Your comment is really out of order - I think you're in a huff because you got called on posting about BG. And to be honest, I'll not be considering BG services if that's the kind of attitude that their employees show.0 -

There are plenty of posters who have described terrible service by BG boiler care and definately don't share your (biased) opinion. Granted there are others who swear by it.
But as a BG employee STOP TELLING US BG IS THE BEES KNEES!
You personally may be an excellent gas engineer, and always leave all your customers satisfied. I don't know. But I can assure you that some of your colleagues, and your company, also let down many customers and leave them dissatisfied and/or out of pocket.0 -
babasu i work for bg too but i may still be able to offer a little help. If the manifold they are saying needs replacing doesn't leak the it doesn't need replacing, worst case scenario it needs a 30 quid service kit to replace the diverter section. Chances are though that your plated hx is blocked again, probably from being flushed with the boiler connected. If this is the case the rads will heat when the water is run until it overheats and locks out....it won't be the diverter section. What does your manual say an f9 fault code relates to? on the very early models it was a blocked hx / overheat fault on the slightly later ones with a different pcb and to the final models it means low water pressure / faulty water pressure sensor.0

Apologies for seeming rude, my opinion is based on you stating they are hopeless yet continuing to stick with them.
And the fact that I have first hand experience of your exact scenario at least once a day.
I'm not touting for business, I was giving advice.
It seems it's fine for everyone else to recommend a service, and to slag off BG, but I couldn't possibly recommend a company who I've worked for for 8 years?

Combis and their diverters. Will people never learn combis are instruments of the devil, put on earth to plague mankind.
He tempts us with promises of extra space by not having a cylinder, but the extra complexity is just waiting to breakdown.
I won't be surprised if all who recommend combis are followers of the Unholy one. :eek:0 -
When you've been around a bit longer here you'll realise that, yes, many people recommend services of which they have positive consumer experience. We do not recommend our own services or businesses. That IS touting.BlueMoonMole wrote: »I'm not touting for business, I was giving advice.

Nonsense.
As for 'slagging off' BG - again, that is consumer experience. If a consumer has a negative experience, reporting that is as valid as reporting a positive experience.0 -
Ollski - thanks for your comments. The F9 fault code does relate to the heating exchanger, and that was replaced back in March to no effect. The engineer who did the power flush advised that it was the ball mechanism (or something - have notes at home on this but can't remember the exact detail) on the manifold, and not the motor (is this making any sense? Even google can't help me on this one!) and that it does need replacing.
I've asked for quotes for replacement and am waiting on these at the moment, but what I was hoping for in particular from this forum, was opinion on whether the particular model of boiler I have is even worth fixing, because I'm being told by a number of people (in person and on specialist plumbing forums) that it's not!
BlueMoonMole - yet another inaccurate judgement from you.
Your 'opinion' is based on me 'stating that they are hopeless yet sticking with them' - if you read what I've written above, it's clear that my finding them hopeless is as a result of my experience of them over the past 2 weeks. So spectacularly unfair to say that I am 'sticking with them' when this situation has only just arisen.
Seriously man, the best way out of a hole is to stop digging. You are rude and judgemental and cast a pall over the otherwise helpful and knowledgeable people on this forum. Shame on you.0 -
