  • apparently, even when out of beta, win 8 will run on the existing win 7 spec. no need for new hardware. we shall see ...

I installed it yesterday on a HP netbook with an Atom Processor and 1 gig of ram, it was running Windows 7 very badly.

It installed in less than 15 minutes and is running like an absolute dream, I am really really surprised and mega chuffed Microsoft finally seem to be stepping up and giving you know who a run for their money :T

The whole thing has me quite excited especially seen as the new metro apps can be coded in javascript and html yipheeeeeeeee.

I am looking on Amazon now for a Windows capable tablet I have a few ideas for some apps and am more than capable with javascript so hey ho lets give it a go :D

It looks very promising indeed, cannot wait for the Beta now :)

HP TC4200. An old girl now, circa 2005-2006 but you can pick them up for not a lot.

Can you guys please advise me - would a factory reset work to bring back the original Windows 7 starter on a Samsung netbook if I install the Windows 8 preview, which does not have an uninstall?
    Thanks.

Possibly provided you don't delete the recovery partition of the netbook. I'd not really recommend trying it just in case though.

if you have deleted your recovery partition and you didn't make your recovery USB stick, then you need to download the exact same windows 7 you previously had from this link this will give you an iso, you then need the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool from this link to put that iso on a USB flash drive (will need to be an at least an 8GB stick) then boot it and install exactly how you did windows 8, you will require the drivers if windows update doesn't install them automatically.

ps if you have windows 7 starter then you will likely have to order the install discs from the manufacturer.
what possessed you to install a pre beta OS over the main OS with no way of getting back, it's an OS so doesn't have an uninstall button
  • Well am happy with Windows 7 .... and if it aint broke dont fix it :)

Thanks for your comments, leemoss and jayme.

I have not yet installed the Windows 8 preview software on a netbook, but was asking about the practicality of doing so and then returning to Windows 7 Starter.

I installed the Windows 8 preview last week in a Virtual Box VM on a Windows 7 desktop pc, but there was a compatibility issue with the Guest Additions, which I need to have another look at to see whether the issue can be resolved.

However, I am also considering the alternative of installing the preview software on a netbook to have a good look at Windows 8 and then resetting the netbook to the original Windows 7 factory settings.

If I decide to try an installation on the netbook, I will do as you guys suggest, and first check that the recovery partition is available.

Things I have noticed so far:

No programme menu on start button this flicks you from Tablet view to Desktop view
No programme close down option at top of programme window, seems all apps remain open in the background.
Socialite is a good Facebook app.
Very difficult to get to shut down menu, seems to only want to log off.
On a Dell 1505 had a 10 second boot up time.
Also like the restore to factory default option

Oh yeah went into Win updates and had 4 to install??? lol
