Thank you so much OP. I think this is really a grabbit because it's not automatic unless you're getting pension credit. So if, like me, you weren't aware of it then you would miss out altogether.

My friend had the same problem but they let her pay a deposit, I think £100 returnable after 1year.

They wanted a £77 deposit for gas & a £120ish deposit for electric , so a £200 deposit , felt like telling them where to go!!!!! lol ... Needless to say I declined and will be happy to move from them to another supplier

They said see what happens when I move ie if I move to a property with prepayment they said I had to stay on prepayment with them if I wanted to stay with them but if its metred / billed then I should be able to change over to billing ( saves them fitting two prepayment metres in anyway! )

I'll just see what the new property has fuel company wise etc and see what is best but would definitely like to come off the prepayment :(

    I don't even owe them a penny!!!!
  • Well. It's good to know that people are benefiting from the taxpayers' contributions. In my experience, there are no rewards for being responsible for oneself and doing things by the book.

As far as i can see, this applies to pensioners (i'm guessing you would rather they freeze over the winter than give them money from the taxpayers?) and people with disabilities who really need it

Wow, talk about jumping to conclusions. I was working in a good paid job until July but am now not working due to a disability which currently leaves me unable to work. Am I meant to let my daughter freeze because of my illness?

Contacted Scottish Power and the agent knew nothing about this and asked where i heard it. She put me on hold and came back to say as they have a social tariff they are phasing out they will introduce the discount scheme over the next 4 years and it won't be fully available to 2015. Codswallop?
  • Warmfront has been around for years, but the terms have been tightened since the relaunch in April and if your boiler isn't actually broken, then you won't qualify. The benefits eligibility is also VERY tight. Funding for the scheme was slashed by two thirds, which explains the new restrictions.

Warm Homes Discount is going to replace all the social tariffs currently offered by the utilities and most have closed them to new applicants - although EDF will retain theirs until 2012 and is certainly worth a look. If you fall into the Core Group, then you should get the rebate automatically. If you don't, you will need to apply and be aware that different terms apply to different suppliers, although all have to be agreed with OFGEM.
  • It said on the BBC news this morning that BG are the only ones who''ll guarantee if you qualify you will get this money. Other 5 suppliers are 1st come 1st served. So when money runs out for them you get nowt at all.
