I think the argument of the bus driver not giving change is irrelevant, he should inform the children that he can not provide change, not just take the money and pocket the difference.
I would speak to the bus company and ask them if his float was high ? if not would they like an opportunity to speak with these boys, plus a lot of buses have cctv now over the driver to prevent assaults, it will have recorded the conversation.
Apologies for the spent it bit but I had not slept after a long job last night but it was based on a similar accusation from my teenager who claimed a bus driver had not given him change from the £5 we gave him, the missus found a receipt from the supermarket in his coat on wash day that mysteriously he had or so he claims found £4.20 at the skate park....On his way home from School of course, as the bus dropped them off early it had a flat tyre, get the drift.

  • Next time give your son £19.50 in small change for the fare and see how the driver likes it then

@ vyle and halibut... I see that in fact you each quoted earlier posts. The Forum Team will delete any post which contains a quote of an earlier message that they have deleted. (There's not a lot of point in deleting a post and then leaving x-many quotes of it visible).

If you disagree with this policy you need to take it up with the Forum Team. You can do this by using the link in my signature or the one at the top of every page on MSE.

    Oh yeah, I remember now.

All I could remember at the time was the much larger chunk about bus companies charging an odd figure that you cannot get from a cash machine.

Essentially, they seem to expect you to either break the note into change at a shop (effectively bumping up the ticket price) or hand over a note and count yourself lucky if you get change.

Not going to post the whole thing again, though.

Have buses not being doing this for years?

Just make sure he has change the next time.

This happened all the time when I was at school so good to know the tradition continues! One day they wouldn't be giving change, the next they wouldn't accept a payment because it was made up of too many small coins!
  • Buy £19.50 worth of postage stamps and try paying the driver with those next time... if all else fails, the driver may accept £19.50 worth of pies and deodorant.

No they are not, they are acceptable tender maybe but not legal tender.

  • And you have no legal right to a bus ride so the driver can just refuse to let you on if you want to or try to pay with stamps!
