Bus driver not giving change

My Son has just started college and has to catch the bus and train, I tried getting a weekly bus ticket for him but was told that he can only get it on the bus.
So Monday morning he is given £20.00 and asks for his weekly gold rider at a cost of £19.50. The bus driver did not give him any change and told him to move, as there was a queue.
My sons friend, who is not 16 gave his £20.00 and his ticket costs £9.50 and he was only given £5.00 change and when he waited for the rest he was rudely told to move and that he had his change.
I am going in to complain today, but wanted to know my son's rights.
Thanks Kirsty

At times i've been on a bus where the driver hasn't had any change, he allowed a few more people on then when more cash came in sorted it then -- maybe this was the case?
Or as above, could he be playing silly bug*ers?
If not, it's your money, not the drivers or the bus companies and they have no right to keep it!
Saying that, if the bus driver denies it and the float tallied -- nothing you can do.0 -
Have buses not being doing this for years?
Just make sure he has change the next time.0 -
I certainly would complain to the bus depot. Maybe the driver didn't have change but he shouldn't of handled it like that.
Bear in mind that any additional money the driver has at the end of the day he will pocket, so if he does that a few times it mounts up nicely.0 -
Since they got rid of conductors, buses up here have (or certainly used to) sign sying "correct money only" or "no chnge given" .0

A few years ago, I got a bus in Cardiff, and they had a sign on the bus indicating to give correct money ONLY as they do not give change - at all. Not sure if this is still the case in Cardiff?0

Cardiff buses haven't given change for years. in the case of 50p it would be tough luck. in the other case the driver gives you a receipt for the £10.50 and you cash it in at the bus depot. its because the driver doesnt have access to the money so a. he cant be the victim of a robbery or b. nick it himself.not because he's being difficult.
i cant speak for other buses so i suggest the OP rings the bus depot and asks for their policy on change. You're not your * could have not of * Debt not dept *0 -
Certain bus companies do state that they require exact fares - certainly our local bus company used not to provide drivers with floats so the only available change came from previous fares. If you end up with a load of 16 year olds all wanting 50p change for their goldriders early on a Monday morning, it might simply not be available. However that can all be dealt with politely so its probably reasonable to enquire about the change policy and complain about the rudeness. That said if the response from the driver had been "Sorry I have no change, you'll have to go and get some somewhere else and catch the next bus" that would probably have been wrong as well.Adventure before Dementia!0

So these two "children" are over 16 and going to college?
Why couldn't they sort this out themselves at the time, why did they let the bus driver take their money and not get change?
I could just imagine it, "Mummy the bus driver robbed me of 50p", my seven year old son has more sense than that when he goes to the local shop.0
