But these fees are only for payments made by credit/debit card, aren't they? Payments made via Paypal seem to be free (https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees-outside)

a Premier/Business account you get charged for any money received.....

and a Personal account is really no good for a seller as you then are restricted to payment receiving limits....and cant receive debit/credit card payments

Can a micro account recieve credit card payments? If so it sounds ideal for me since most of the things I sell only fetch between £5 - £10.

Sorry, I'm a bit lost here, so could you please explain in very simple terms? Presumably you mean as a seller intending to do this quite a lot, rather than someone just looking to clear out a few bits of clutter? As most people on ebay seem to have little choice but to sign up to PP, does it really matter if a seller doesn't have a business account?

BTW, what are the payment receiving limits? The pages I've found seem to indicate there are none, although there are limits on how much you can withdraw from your PP account.

More simply..if you want to tick the 'I accept paypal' box on ebay then you must be able to accept all paypal payments, whether funded by card or from an existing balance. If you only have a basic account then you can only accept balance transfers safelty, and some bank funded payments (some bank funded payments also trigger the need to uprgade). A basic account cannot receive payments funded by debit or credit cards.

If you don't want to pay paypal fees then don't tick the 'I accept paypal box' and don't mention paypal much at all, but just tag a line on the item description to say that you will accept paypal but only if buyer is using an existing balance. This has two problems, firstly it gets complicated as you will have to invice anyone direct if they want to use paypal, and secondly for buyers like me who search by default only for auctions where paypal is accepted I would never see your auction at all!

There are new rules for basic accounts which you might wanty to investigate as well. You can apparently accept two card funded payments a year without incurring the upgrade request, so it might be possible to start off with a basic account and just upgrade the moment you get the third payment..

Thanks, that's very helpful. It would be nice if PP made their 'help' pages clearer. I've currently got 3 items going through that have bids on them. Should I think about upgrading to a micro account now, or just wait and see what happens with these customers?
