  • Lets get one thing straight, Kwik-fit do not employ engineers. Engineer's study for years and have to be registered with the Engineering Council. Kwik-fit employ grease monkeys, and at best mechanics. They are employed to generate revenue for Kwik-fit. They may do this with the benefit of commission. This gets the good honest mechanics a bad name for sure. Either do not use Kwik-fit or go almost anywhere else instead.

You may find that your discs are not worn to the point that they need replaced.
You may find that same of the pads

I know he said they were not worn below limit but you may find that they actually have 6 - 12 months of life left in them yet. You may find you need pads but not discs.

Ideally you need to know what the minimum thickness are for your pads and discs and then know what they are actually at the moment, and what they were when new, then you can make an informed decision. because you will know they are not even half worn or more than half worn, and if you're really smart you'll be able to work out that they are half worn and last changed 2 years ago so you have 2 years left.

If you put your exact model details here I'm sure someone helpful will tell you your new and minimum thicknesses, then you just need to ask the next garage to actually measure them so you know where you are at.

The tyre needs changing, buying one tyre is certainly an option you don't have to buy iin pairs. You could buy 1 new and swap it with the spare, if the spare is roughly the same tread depth as the other worn front. Or if the spare is brand new buy one new one and put it & the spare on the same axle.

Of course.... regarding the tyre....it is still legal so there's no harm in swapping that one with your spare assuming you have a good tread on your current spare, then you need not buy any tyre at all!

Ring your local Ford dealer for a quote. They'd probably charge less than that for genuine Ford parts. Toyota have a fixed price promise and for genuine discs and pads it's about £230 for an Avensis sided car. I'd expect Ford to be a bit cheaper.

Don't know where this comes from, I have a full City and Guilds 390 and Technicians Certificate, entitled to full membership of Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE) and other bodies. I'm not registered with the Engineering Council, neither are any of the 40 or so technicians I work alongside.

Moves are afoot that all motor vehicle technicians (call them what you will) will have to registered with an appropriate body, some time in the future.

You don't even have to have served an apprenticeship to become an MOT inspector these days. You can undertake a 60 question multichoice exam at the local VOSA centre
  • Hi SteveJW,
Re. Engineers We are going off the subject of the post I guess. But you cannot call yourself a Chartered nor Incorperated Engineer without registation. You may be a well qualified and a good capable Technician, but would you like to be compared with a Kwik-fit fitter?

Are you one of the people who when I was in the workshop used to come in and say I'm an engineer, but knew nothing about cars!!!

A shedload of company car drivers are told to go there by their leasing companies. They get charged full whack but the leasing companies normally have a post invoice discount scheme in place.
    The man without a signature.
  • That price is double what it should be.

Do yourself a favour and stay away from Kwikfit.
