£250-00 to fit new brake pads and discs ?

Took my car into Kwik-fit today to get a free brake check up for my Mondeo.

Engineer advised me that I needed two new brake pads and two new brake disks fitted. He advised me that they were above the legal limit but would need replacing sooner rather than later. He quoted me a price of £250 to do the work and spouted on about how their brakes were the premium ones and came with a lifetime replacement guarantee. He also advised me that I needed to replace one of my tyres as it was 1.7mm tread.

I advsied him that I would get quotes elsewhere before committing. He responded that I would probably get better quotes elsewhere but I would be buying inferior quality and it wouldn't be value for money.

Strange cos I noticed that the two engineer's cars in the car park both had budget tyres fiited on them; namely Continental and Arrowsmith. Hardly practising what he was preaching.

Anyway can anyone give me advise on what to do as I am not an expert.

not sure I would say Continental are budget!

Guess the majority is the discs... do they really need changing

  • For starters you would not fit only one tyre.

As for the brake work, a quick google would bring up thousands of posts slating Kwik Fit and a few hundred praising them.
  • I never believe the price that Kwik fit give me anymore as you can generally beat them down. I was quoted £300 for an exhaust replacement part for a Mazda 323 and told them I would look elsewhere for it. Funnily, he then came back and dropped the price to £220 which of course I accepted. I would try and knock them down if you feel it's worth it.

Nor would I !! but the engineer advised me that I had a budget tyre on the front of my car and as one of the front tyres is a Michelin, he must have been referring to the Continental.

    Tyres should wear in pairs.

£250 may be a fair price for your brakes depending on the model. It may be a poor price for a basic Mondeo or a good price for a top of the range Mondeo.

they have their parts delivered by partco/brown brothers which are owned by unipart
they sell standard discs and pads and £250 is a joke and not a funny one at that

To get an idea of the parts cost so you can estimate the labour, have a look at:

Try at least two other places for a quote before accepting Kwik Fit's offer.

It does seem rather on the high side to me.

There is absolutely no reason why you cannot replace just one tyre on any car. You would do that if you ran over a piece of metal and damaged one tyre. The wear on each tyre would then be unequal and you would replace the more worn one later on. You have to have the same type of tyre on an axle but that is all (and that doesn't mean the same brand) but the same type such as size and ply.
