Thanks very much for your comprehensive guide to getting the best from your BT line. I'd been thinking of moving to Virgin on their £20 for 2 bundle, but was a bit wary of doing so, so I'm going to do your suggestions instead!!

One question though - I know that signing up to Primus is your preferred choice, but do I understand correctly that using Sky Talk Freetime is still as valuable if the 60 min per call is not an issue and I am already a Sky subscriber??

Also, we have been with 18866 for years now - would changing to 18185.com make any substantial savings??

Thanks very much in advance for any guidance you - or others!! - might give me!

You are right, Sky Talk Freetime gives the same free UK 01/02 evening and weekend calls - just 60 minutes instead of 90 minutes.

Also, we have been with 18866 for years now - would changing to 18185.com make any substantial savings?? Without checking more closely, my 'off the top of my head' reply to that would be the savings on calls to UK mobiles are considerable with 18185 when compared to 18866.

Hi, I've been reading your threads on this as I want to get away from BT, (my latest phone bill is £123.xx thanks to their "oh sorry we forgot to bill you" message) (that's this MONTH by the way not 1/4 ), & am more than interested in Primus..........everyone keeps going on about their Saver 2 option, but why has no-one mentioned their Saver 3 option ? For £8.49 plus the BT line rental it says any time calls are free, or am I reading it wrong? Please help before I call anyone & make even more of a mess of things !?!?!?

You're reading it slightly wrong - paying £8.49 up-front each month covers all your calls of up to 90 minutes - but ONLY to UK 01 or 02 numbers.

As Primus Saver Option 2 gives you, for no monthly fee, free evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls of up to 90 minutes, you'd be paying £8.49 just for weekday daytime UK 01/02 calls. You could make 169 calls of any length to UK 01/02 numbers using 18185 for that price. Do you make that many such calls each month, every month?

In any case, £8.49 is not cheap. Click on the 'HERE' link in my signature below and scroll down to the bottom of the page to see possible alternative CPS providers (all cheaper).

So with saver option 2 I would pay them nothing up front but would get free evening & weekend calls, with presumably their rates during the day being cheaper than BT?
I have 3 daughters who it would seem have been using the phone duringthe day to mobiles, & also using Mrs Lemmings laptop for dial up access as I changed the password on the PC to cut down on MSN usage (fat lot of good thats done) so that's an 0845 number for god knows how long during the day!!
I'm with NTL (well. VirginMedia apparently) for broadband & when my £9.99 offer was up they changed it to £17.99, so I called them & said can you change it back, so they did, which was very nice, but that offer period is again coming to an end, so do you have any updates on Primus for broadband as well as option 2 (I saw a thread about it the other day but cant find it again)

Now you have me confused. Do you have NTL (Virgin Media) cable broadband but a BT landline?

In the meantime, install a Phone Guard on each phone socket to stop them using dial-up internet and calling mobiles.

At the same time, if you have a 18185 account, why not program the laptop to dial 1818502081149845 so dial-up internet access costs 5p regardless of how long whoever uses it is online?

Hi Heinz, sorry about that, I have a BT landline & NTL cable broadband.
I have a feeling that I will go with Primus option 2, register with 18185, & sort out the broadband change later when the offer runs out.
Not sure what the number is that you just posted apart from the 18185 bit but the laptop dial up is Orange (from an old Freeserve disc) so I think the number is 0845..........
I will register tomorrow with Primus & 18185 & will follow your link about the phone guard now.
I'm not sure how to thank you so I'll say it here & then try to press your button in a minute (ooerr)..........Thank you :T

Click the link under the 0208 number above and you'll see what the 'free' dial-up internet access is all about (not tried it myself but it appears legit).

If you've not done so yet, click the 'HERE' link in my signature below too - there may well be some other telephony savings there for you.

I'm not knocking any of this & please dont think I'm not grateful for the advice but how does GeoISP manage to provide free internet access? I clicked on your link & it took me to a page with no links, just some info, with no need to register !!! So I just put that number into the "dial" box on the laptop? Does that only work though if I'm registered with 18185 (which I hopefully will be tomorrow)? The phone guard also looks good & for a fiver how could I knock it :)

You don't need 18185 to use GeoISP, but by using 18185 your dial-up internet call will only cost 5p for the whole call!

I have the GeoISP with 18185 set up on my PC for back up if my broadband goes down. I've tested GeoISP and it works great.
