I agree thriftlady, and having re-read, my ranting post was in no way meant to be directed at your ranting post, as a young OS'er I get the 'common sense' speech all the time, and sometimes it's not down that that. If you get what i mean!
Anyway, I feel that most of the time they are covering their own backs. The UK has seen a surge in legal battles regarding food, I feel this has been fueled by the US' mentality of sue everyone for everything. If someone was to eat shop bought ketcup and ended up in hospital, you can bet some lowlife would sue for personal injury as there were no directions on the pack. i'm sure there was a case in the US where someone had a nut allergy, ate peanut butter and suffered anaphalactic (sp?) shock and won a courtcase as there was no warning label on the pack. :eek::eek::eek:
However I also believe that products back in the day were made very differently to the batch made, factory processed items that grace our shelves. And cheap ingredients mean that we have sub standard products unfortuantely.

Actually, just to jump in where angels fear to tread, don't you think that today's mass produced products might actually be more hygenically produced than those of yesteryear? I am sure that if we're brave and keep the pickles in a cool cupboard, they might have a chance of lasting longer than something made in Aunt Maggie's kitchen simply because the food companies are liable.
Anyway, thanks for the thread. You've made me think about my own illogical system of keeping some things in a cupboard and some in the fridge. I think, overall, I'm with Thiftlady.0 -
I cant help thinking - can we just do what we feel comfortable with? I am sure we all know when something is 'off'. as elf and safety dont inspect my kitchen (thank god) I dont feel the need to follow strict guidelines intended for people selling food to the public. I havent poisoned any one (yet) using my eyes and nose as guides. my OH nearly killed me once - was ill for a week and on recovering appetite he made me bacon sarnie - unfortunately, i had opened pack a few days before i fell ill and he used it! the smell alerted me and on inspecting the couple of slices left could see they were - brown and slimey and stank! he thought as they were in fridge they would be ok!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0

Oh lordy, could you just imagine if they did? LOL Let all sorts of things 'pass' in places that prepare food for the public (kebab shops etc...) but would probably fine me for those two crumbs in the back of the dry goods cupboard

I never used to keep my tomato sauce in the fridge, and I suppose living in a a hot country it was kind of silly not to. i never really thought about it until one day I used the tomato sauce, only to find it was full of little maggot type worms :eek: I have to admit that it was there for a fair while coz i cant stand the stuff and my little one didnt use to like it either.. So, since that day the mustard, all the sauces, salad dressing etc live inside the fridge. Yes my top shelf and door panels have been over run with bottle, but sigh - what to do..............0
