And please stop telling everyone to look in the reduced cabinets, the crowds round them are getting bigger and bigger, turns ugly sometimes!

True a couple of weeks ago I was in Sainsbugs and by the reduced counter were two very well-dressed ladies arguing over a packet of mince

First one .I think that the mince is mine
Second one ,No my dear i think you'll find that I was here first and it is mine

I watched open mouthed as these two rather soppy women dripping in jewllery had a tug of war over a pound of mince

    Good article!

So, the moral is - don't chuck it out, see what you can do with it instead. Real OS!!

Like the sound of the cook book mentioned in the article as well.....

The only thing I miss now I've resolved not to use the supermarkets is the reduced section. Just after Christmas I saw a woman demanding that the poor lad pricing the reduced section knock some more off the steak she'd picked up. He was only a kid and looked like a rabbit caught in the headlamps! She told him rather loudly that she was a friend of the store manager and she'd get him sacked if he didn't reduce them more! Needless to say, I couldn't resist the urge to butt in. I said if she did know the manager to go get him to mark it down further. She just stared at me so I said that as she obviously wasn't prepared to pay that much for the food could she pass it to me as I might like to buy it. She gave me this really venomous look then put the steak in her trolley and flounced off. Me and the shop assistant almost peed ourselves with laughing after she'd gone.

I would have grabbed it quick and legged it!(maybe if feeling brave!) they prob wouldn't even have noticed through their squabble and it would have served them right!!

Right. I went into M&S yesterday and took advantage of the £6.99 meal for 2 with a bottle of wine deal. I paid for it, came home and stuck it in the fridge.

Got home and thought nice cheap "takeaway". Noticed today it has a use by date of yesterday. Phoned M&S who told me that it was "my prerogative" to check dates not theirs, and they are legally entitled to sell the food with a use by until midnight that night. She was a bit cheeky actually and I was very nice, calm and all I was asking for was to swap it for another. I won't be back in store to next week. so can't even take it back in the interim.

Feel a bit shortchanged. Could understand if it had a big "whoopsie" on it, but nothing. I feel a bit daft for not checking too. So I appreciate that on some level, yes, its my fault for not checking but...I've essentially paid £7 for a bottle of wine I don't drink (give aways at Xmas and Birthdays)

What can I do with it? I'm loathe to throw it out, and I can't very well keep it in the fridge for a week until next Thursday. Use by is one of these dodgy ones where I can't eat it after the date can I?

What is the meal? I imagine it would be fine to eat still. I eat a lot of things after their use by and I'm still alive and kicking :)

Use by date is an advisory date for using. As long as it is not fish (which your is not) you can still eat it 1-2 days after. I would.

Use your own senses whether it's ok, rather than a guideline date the retailers put on with extra lee way to cover themselves legally.

Tbh those products are so fresh they have such a short turnaround on the shelves, that it's quite likely to pick one up on the day it's due to go out of date. It's only been 16 hrs 45 mins since the stroke it passed its date.

Does it look ok? No patches of mould or discoloration?

    Does it smell ok?

Go ahead and cook it, try a bit first... as long as your fridge works, it will most likely be fine!
