Also there bags are very thin and even been suggested to use 2 when you carry heavy things

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2026434/Eco-friendly-bags-Tesco-dumps-green-carriers-actually-harm-environment.html

"Tesco claimed that the biodegradable bags, which include an ingredient that makes them break down after 20-36 months, would defeat this problem."

However, it is pulling them from stores after five years following independent scientific research funded by the Government which suggests they may damage wildlife and the environment.

Their report warned that these bags can litter the countryside for up to five years before they degrade, far longer than the supermarket claims. This is because they are not exposed to enough of the heat and sunlight they need to break down.
The additive used in the bags to make them break down also means that they cannot be recycled.
The biodegradable bags do eventually crumble into a fine dust, according to the researchers.

But my Tesco bags degrade in a matter of weeks as it is - Hardly going to sit there trying to rot for 100 years as the government tries to tell us!

If they charge me 5p per bag i think i might go back and demand my rights under the SOGA saying that these bags that are degrading so quick are not fit for purpose to be used especially as lidl only charge 10p for thick plastic bags that do not degrade and are also a lot bigger!

My chippy uses brown paper bags (albeit this is in england) lol.
  • Our store spends 1000 pound a week on carrier bags. Think how many more staff we could hire if we didn't need to pay that much.

None. It would just be extra profit.

Here's an idea. Take your lidl bags with you when you go to Tesco.

But who will police the tills if you want to 'buy' a bag?

M&S just trust you to pay for the bag if you pick one up at the self scan.

Yeah, absolutely. The shops won't bother to police something of such little value. They might spot the odd person I guess because they do have assistants around the self-service tills. But generally speaking it's not worth their while to care too much. Most people will be honest about it anyway. And if you're not... well done you! You've ripped a supermarket off for 5p! Awesome victory; you must be very proud and satisfied about that earth shattering success (I'm not talking about you Bongedone, btw!).

With Tesco you have the option for them to deliver it without bags. You get a green clubcard point for every 10 items in the order if you select this option.

did you read my post? should I quote it all again?

It would be good to see someone refuse paying for bags while holding up a queue and carrying there purchases to there car just to make a point.

If I was in the queue behind that person I would be making a point too, by telling them to hurry the hell up and telling them what a tool I think they are.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

No it's alright, I have this crazy thing on my mouse called a scroll wheel.

Yes I read, your post, and I've just re-read it, and I still can't figure out why you're being sarcastic about the whole thing

I couldn't work out why you thought Tesco giving me green points for not having bags would help me, when I need the food delivered in bags.

I also can't work out why you thought I was being sarcastic about the whole thing.

And by the way, Tesco will presumably withdraw the green points.

Norman Castle, Tesco, Sainsbury, and Waitrose will all deliver without bags now, without charging more for bags. Soon, Waitrose will charge per bag in Wales: they're changing to the new system early (they sent me a letter about it).

I think only the skint will start to reuse bags because of this

That's most of us in Wales :D

I do find it slightly annoying reading the website, they talk about how to manage this as though everyone is a stay-at-home mum with a car and time to clean things.

I'm a single, childless adult with no schedule or routine - I get to nip home sometimes for only 2 days out of the month, and almost never plan my shopping trips; they're just opportunities grabbed in the moment.

As a result, I won't keep bags in my glove compartment (because I won't usually be driving), I won't have them in my coat pocket (because I have fashionable coats, a different colour for every day of the week), and my kids won't carry them (because I don't have any kids). I will continue to use a plastic bag liner in my household bins because I won't have time to carry them up and down stairs, empty them and then clean them out. And I won't be washing and pegging out my carrier bags (the quaintest suggestion of them all!).

None of this is laziness per se - I just have better things to do in the rare and valuable time I spend enjoying my home town. And by the way, I've never thrown away a carrier bag that's only been used once - I take them home, use them as bin liners, use them to carry lunch or clothes around...

BUT having said all that, it's a minor annoyance. Really minor. And if it has an overall positive impact for everyone, great. I'll put up with it for that. And maybe do more of my shopping in London.
