Why does society make us feel guilty for taking coins to the bank??

Options
No matter if it is even just a few bags of silver, people in the queue sigh and tut even though paying a few bags directly into your account is quicker than paying bills or whatever that other people do!'

Why is this?? It's only money!

  • Perhaps it's because some people only have 1/2 an hour for lunch, and queues are long at lunchtimes as it is without bank tellers having to check bags for the right amounts of money when people mix the coins, or don't have the right amounts in them.

If you have bagged the coins correctly then it shouldnt take any longer for the teller to do the transaction than any other.

Where people sigh and get frustrated is where those that havent bagged correctly and mixed and matched the coins or used damaged bags that need the teller to correct it.

To be honest they are probably sighing at those people who think they can just hand over a tupperware tub full of mixed coins and expect the teller to pay it in the account. Showing no consideration for the people who have to wait behind them.

But if the coins are separated and bagged as they should be it really would not take much longer than most other transactions.

Yes I do mean when they are bagged correctly etc and you hand over say four bags of £10 worth of 50p, the teller weighs it, gives you a receipt, done in 2 minutes but people still get angry!!

In my experience the banks are just as bad. Having 2 small children who are often given £1 or 50p by relatives, we have to take bags of coins to pay into their accounts. Last time we went we were told we could only put in three bags for each child at a time as they couldn't accomodate any more!! They are a bank for goodness sake! Surely 'accomodating money' is a large part of their business?
  • Hi the hsbc have a machine you can put your coins in and gives a receipt, not sure about other banks though, hope this may help
    :)
  • Some banks have coin machines that automatically count and deposit your money into your account - there are some topics around here about them

But don't use the ones in supermarkets as they take a % as a fee - the ones in banks don't (assuming you have an account with that bank - HSBC/Barclays are the main ones I think)
  • Because people are ignorant. It's just as inconsiderate for people to tut and moan when someone wants to pay in coins. What should we do? Just store all out coins at home? You have just as much right to do your banking as the next person. I hate when people think they have some superiority over the next.

I was in the bank the other day and some woman came in shouting that she needed to be served quickly as she was late for a flight to Gatwick. I was actually at the front, had been waiting a while and had a busy day ahead of me. She asked some people if she could push in front but the lady behind me said no. Well all hell broke loose as the woman then proceeded to give this poor lady abuse for not letting her push in front. And rightly so, it's not our fault she was running late and with an attitude like hers it's just as well she didn't let her push in if that's sort of person she is!

My point is queuing is a fact of life, we all have to do it and none of us particularly like it. But don't there's no need to get stroppy just because you're running late etc How do you know the person in front or behind isn't running late also?

  • The sooner everyone realises that

    1) Queues mean first come first served

    and

    2) Transactions take as long as they take, if you wished to be served sooner then you should have come sooner (see 1)

    the better.

Paying in £40 of 50ps in £10 bags wouldn't even take 2 minutes. Try 30 seconds...
