Think it means 'for God's sake'. Maybe they could agree to freeze the charges for a set time to give them the chance to pay the bill? Its not going to help anyone to keep adding to a debt they wont be able to pay, might be worth asking

They'd be incredibly lucky if they agree to that.At the end of the day the cattery are using resources to keep these cats and it's costing them money so they should be paid for it.As harsh as it may seem to the owners they can't expect them to lose money.

No. it will cost. But it's costing more than the owners can now generate. So what is the logical conclusion to this? Owners have paid the original bill, they can now not afford the rest. So now what? The cattery sell the cats? Destroy them? Then apply to Courts for a small claim?

OK, everyone on here is singing from the same hymn, so it looks like "tuff kitty", but wow, the debtor offered to pay, set up a DD, leave cheques, etc. But now it's "unlucky fried kitten" time. and we all go back to our happy beds at night.

Rant over, i think tere is more to this and on Monday, will chat to...... county council, trading standards, CAB, ....... anyone else?

    Cheers for all your suggestions,

it did at least give me a flavour of one possible direction,

    and SHEGIRL what is FGS?

DD's can be cancelled, checks can bounce...they've lost money keeping these cats longer than usual due to non-payment,so it's no surprise they don't want to risk not recouping it.

Try and set up a final payment with them or take a loan to pay,it wouldn't be right to try and get away without paying..in the time they've had these cats they could have had others in their place, others having their food and care and be paid for it

Consider your friendly loan shark, a bank for that matter, or even a car clamper...... "what......can't pay?...... oh well well keep fining / charging you until you can!!!"

They're not being fined, they are being charged for a continuing service because they have failed to pay their bill on time.

Imagine putting yourselves in the catteries position, you have a client who can't afford to pay the bill they've had six months notice of to get their beloved cats out of quaratine, out of the kindness of your heart you let the cats go home, the owners disppear of the face of the earth, you never see the money they owe.

Unfortunately cats are not like cars or houses, they're not registered, you can't put a restriction or charging order against them, so the sensible thing to do is hold on to them until the owners pay the outstanding bill. The fact that they are being charged more the longer they stay is entirely the owners fault for not ensuring they made provisions for the known bill, no-one elses.

I'm sure this is what the owners agreed to when they signed the paperwork when the cats were taken into quarantine, I know my mother did when she arranged for her dog to arrive back in the UK at Heathrow and he had to be held for two days before delivery to me.

I suggest they check the paperwork they signed.

like others have said, settle the debt via loan/credit card now to cut off the daily increase. Most card will offer an interest free period on purchases, find one and use this as the buffer to pay back the remainder.

I beleive the OP is mistakingly assuming a cattery woudl be covered under the same debt management offerings as a financial institution.

The cats are consuming a service, the debt management of that expense needs to be handled externally to the cattery itself.

    Hi to all,

I am acting as advocate to a couple who after returning from abroad place their cats into a cattery for quaranteen.

When you were employed as an advocate, were the cat owners aware that your advice would be wholly based on an MSE thread?

    I like your business!
