DD has a medium sized stocking which was bought for her 1st christmas and have managed to get most of the stuff bought for this for around £20 plus only need to get bubble bath, book (small one hopefully), fancy toothbrush and chocolate. I managed to put in small stuff like pants, socks, travel game, small craft sets (all half price when I see them) and all bigger items are wrapped up and placed on the sofa - all from santa. Last year we did new pjs and a xmas dvd from mum and dad on christmas eve.

Only got a few more stuff big stuff to buy as trying to get santa present organised soon as will have a newborn in November/December so at least santa present will be bought.

  • http://www.tigerstores.co.uk/ is a great shop for stocking fillers but they're not online and are based around London/South. Nothing in there is branded, and its very quirky but quite cheap. Worth a look if you have a store nearby.

I've spent £30 on DS. He's 1 so I can't get stuff which could be dangerous (e.g. small bits and pieces) - his main present is £25, so I feel I can justify £30 ish on the stocking. As he gets older, I'll probably spend less on his stocking as his main present is likely to be more expensive. I buy stuff as I see it, espeically when its on offer, so in actual fact, although his stocking cost £30, the stuff was originally sold at a higher price.

My sister usually tasks me with getting the stocking fillers for my niece and nephew and normally gives me £25 each. I've found that girls are so much easier to buy for than boys.

Girls: hairbands, purses, bags, jewellery, nail varnish, craft sets.
    Shops: Claires accessories, Primark, H & M

Boys: Lego, sweets, yo-yo, something gooey (like alien slime or something), a mini football
SHops: The Works, Hawkins Bazzar, Toys R Us.
  • I was one of 5 and we had sacks, so there were always things we needed in there anyway, pants, socks, pyjamas, toothbrushes, and to take up a bit of space one of those multipacks of individial boxes of mostly sugary cereals (we never had them any other time throughout the year except maybe some birthdays).

Do you have to get rid of the sack? get a stocking, and use the sack for the presents that santa delivers, maybe?

On the subject of stockings, a couple of years ago I bought some of those ornamental stocking holders, because I'd always wanted them as a child. We never hung our stockings at the fireplace, we just put them on the bedpost. Eldest said it wasn't as good though, because he likes wiggling his toes at the bottom of the bed to 'feel if Santa's been yet' (he's a teenager and stopped believing in Santa when he was 7, but he likes to pretend).

Now we use them as ornaments, put the stockings on them on the fireplace during the day, then Santa brings the stockings upstairs and puts them on the beds when he has filled them :D

Where did you find them? I've also wanted some for years. My mum has some but she bought them from a Garden centre miles away. I'd like mine to be hung from my fireplace as part of the Christmas decs, regardless of what I do with them come Christmas Eve. Mine are the wizard hats as stockings as worn by Mickey Mouse in Fantasia, bought in Disneyland Paris in 2 different colours.
  • Hi all,

Some good suggestions already. I do stockings for my DH, DBro, BIL+GF (they share a stocking tho'!).....DH and BIL never had stockings as kids so I felt they missed out, and my mum passed a few years ago so I've kinda taken on the 'stocking elf' role for DBro. The youngest of my lot is 27, so can be tricky to not spend a fortune, without it being just tat.

Usually, they each get Chomp/Curly Wurly/some other 80's sweets, socks (pound shop), choc coins, and then some some sort of hobby specific doodah.

This year, I've 'made' personalised stubby holders (neoprene can holders) and drinks coasters, and plan on knitting them all gloves or a hat each to go in too, and will be putting in Aussie themed chocs/sweets (Caramel Koalas here rather than caramel Freddos, etc) rather than the 80's theme I usually do as it's our first xmas in Aus. Come to think of it, I don't know if I can even get Chomps here!

Right, off to have a think of what else I can do for this year.

Thanks for starting a good thread, OP!

  • From reading all the posts it would seem most of us have the same ideas about what to put in the stockings. I still do one for my eldest who is now 24!! but she is the easiest as us girls like little bits and pieces don't we?

The boys are more difficult as they get older, but I find that Boots do travel size 'branded' (Ted Baker etc) toiletries usually on a 3 for 2 which the boys like.

These say they are weighted, to hold heavy stockings.

I got mine from Tesco but I think that's the only time I've seen them there. Mine are ceramic ornaments, a Santa and a Snowman but every year they both want the snowman.
