Well here's my two cents worth. I thouroughly agree that bachelors degrees are pretty much worthless now, they might as well be toilet paper and millions of poor suckers are about to pay 27K for one. Anybody who gets less than an A and two B's at A-level should not be permitted to go to university purely because they are not bright enough to study at that level and will simply accumulate massive debt and then get a job in a bar. I do not know a single graduate of non-goverment sponsored degrees (nursing, social work, teaching etc) who has got a job that requires a degree in the past 5 years and these people are heart-broken.
The fact that virtually everybody has a degree means that employers can ask for one when it is clearly not required often for jobs which are basically secretarial and thus the pressure to go to university is massive in order to gain any type of employment. It is just a government scam to get unemployment statistics down as students do not count towards the figures. In contrast jobs which require technical training are paying massive salaries as demand is so high. You can earn more as a mechanic than you can as a staff nurse (going rate is 24-28k round here versus 21-25K for a nurse).
I am looking for a job at the moment and compared to 2007 when I last looked there literally is virtually nothing out there. For people with limited skills or work experience the task will be nigh on impossible when even the highly experienced are looking at jobs which barely pay more than minimum wage.0 -
Excellent post Pennywise. All makes perfect sense to me.0

I mentioned in a thread before about a friend with a degree landing a job as a lollipop lady . A very bad state of affairs to be saddled with student debt and that is all , after 3 years of hard work you are good for .
On the other hand the over 50`s also find themselves in a perlious place .

Often a time when finances are not great . Also expecting a further 15 years in work to build up money behind them . Kids at school or at uni . Quite likely still with debts and a mortgage . Do also remember that less companies pay into a pension fund .
Now with the average age of a first time buyer being 35 think what that would hold if this is a pattern .
Savings are rubbish , annuities halved over a couple of decades and a stock market that is no better than a yo yo . Yet many , even at retirement age cannot afford to give up work . Yet the toffs say , we might all have to work a bit longer . They didn`t quite say where these jobs are coming from . To me this is not acceptable .
Tax payers are picking up a lot of bills . Underfunded state job pensions whilst many of these same tax payers look forward to a much reduced income in retirement . Start your own business , don`t make me laugh . I speak from a long time being self employed . If you are a small trader there is little help . However costs are soaring . The state is intruding everywhere . Next door put out there rubbish a day to early . The refuse police came around and fined them £50 !
House prices shot up way beyond where they should be . With the likes of kirsty and co ( was she really an advisor on housing for the Tory party ) , people were inflamed to buy a nasty little gaff in case they missed the boat .
For people on benefits who require housing , so much more has to be found by the tax payer to pay the market rental price .
I could go on . I cannot see a way out of this dreadful state of affairs .
You should start by not putting spaces before every full stop and comma. Other than that, I'm not sure what else you can do to fix your "sorry state of affairs".They call me Mr Pig!0 -

You're still not getting it.
Try again.They call me Mr Pig!0 -
Well Mr. Pig , bowing down to your compelling arguements . The fact I use spaces is my choice . So when do we get your pearls of wisdom regarding the original topic ? Would make a change from your " irony " . Or has Mummy sent you off to bed by now ?0

Recently, I have stopped putting a fullstop at the end of a paragraph - it seems redundant
Recently, I have also discovered that at 62, I am entitled to Pension Credits, which effectively means I can retire at the same age as a woman who shares my bithdate
I have begun looking into the possibility of doing some voluntary work, but I am beginning to to think that even the voluntary sector is getting overcrowded

Thank you Trucker . I am also aware that if you are unemployed over 60 , as a man , you are indeed entitled tp PTC . However this is means tested or indeed that was the picture I got when I lost my agency .0

Yes it's means-tested, but you don't have to justify yourself - it's a matter of personal choice, but only until the pension-age re-alignments are complete (I think)

Thatcher was in the 80's, dole money was in the 80's and there was a breakdown in family life and discipline too.
At school we had briefs careers chats @ 10 or 11 years old.
Most were waiting to go into work, college or uni. Not many considered the dole because there were jobs easily obtained!!!
We had a huge choice of jobs - I had Antiference, Mollins, Rexels, Rat breeding place, Army Depot, Hozelock, Donut.C.A, Leyland, councils, shops and loads of others crying out for staff.
None of this bollox CV nonsense, quick chat in most cases!!!!
!!!!!! are the jobs going to come from???0
