First "make up" for eleven year old

  • Tragically I know some 11 year olds who are better at applying their make up than me... :rotfl:

What about Avon? They have some sparkly pallettes for quite cheap atm and some nice lip glosses?

I can whole heartedly recommend Barry M and Stargazer nail stuff. They are both low cost and the coverage is very smooth and durable. And the Stargazer glitters are excellent.

Oh yes, Barry M is THE absolute best nail polish I've ever used. It stays on forever, even on my toes and even on my DD's nails. It's a shame i didn't discover just how good it is until my DD bought some, I'd have saved a fortune on all those premium brands I've tried over the years.

Yes, I am evil - I defy you to not want to click 'add to basket' on at least 50% of these!

This thread has been quite useful OP, thanks. :D

My soon to be 12 year old is desperate to wear make up and I have always refused as her tastes are such that I envisaged a young coco the clown in the making.

Thankfully she has seen one of her friends with so much slap on she looks like a hooker (no, I make no apologies for using that word, it's an absolute disgrace how this child's parents let her go about.)

She now realises less is more when it comes to making yourself look good and now she is being reasonable and realistic, I'm more relaxed about buying make up for her as long as strict rules about 'when and where' are observed.

I read an article the other day where research has been done on puberty and maturity and children are maturing at a younger age than ever before. (This was said to be because of physical changes btw, not as a result of any external factors.) So I suppose it's not surprising girls are becoming more interested in this kind of thing at a younger age.

Oh, and make sure you get them into the habit of always having a strengthening base coat on.......

    Because......? :o

Does it just help stop nails from breaking? :o

You can tell I never wear nail polish. :D

I can well believe it, my just 10 year old's little buds are growing at an alarming rate, she's definitely going to take after me on the boob front, but I really don't think I got mine that early, although I do remember that they appeared almost overnight.

It stops the nails from becoming stained, especially by any colour with red in it.

Online, via the link I've just posted and in little chemists/drugstores, etc, tattoo places, piercing places, niche clothing stores, goth shops...

Goth shops are the best - they have them (and the makeup, which is very good quality, but not so much the 'natural' look :)), and they get the younger girls creeping in looking all nervous and timid of the big scary girls with blue and purple hair...then they come back a few times, then get a couple of pairs of socks or a pair of gloves, some earrings or a bracelet....and before you know it, you have a girl expressing herself :)

It should help stop the nails splitting and breaking (I use OPI nail envy, as it works for me - but it is a stooopid price, QVC via Quidco is the most cost effective way to get it),

but it also provides a perfect surface for the colour to go on, (which stops it from lifting and flaking),

stops the nails getting stained by dark colours

and makes it a whole lot easier to take the whole lot off (nail varnish removed lifts it all, so no odd patches where the colour has stuck harder than others, for example, and the edges of the nailbed are protected by clear, so they don't have colour in them)

Adding a top coat significantly improves the durability as well, and it shows the colour off to its best advantage as again, the less water, etc, than can get between the nail and the polish, the less likely it is to lift up.

    **********

I stopped biting my nails about 2 years ago now, and whilst I don't have long nails anymore (after the initial compulsive growing), as they catch on the strings and annoy the heck out of me, I do have a different colour on them every week.

Having just had slightly dry nails due to a change in nail polish remover, they've had some oil massaged into them and I've left polish off for about 3 days. They need a bit of a spruceup, but nothing too dramatic - they'll look great once I've finished bleaching the work surfaces, though.

I think my toes have been metallic purple Barry M for about a month. [looks dow] Yes, must be a month - there's a small chip on my left big toe and I can see the gap at the base where it's growing out. Base coat, two colour coats and a top coat really can last that long.

As you may guess, I'm a bit of a nail fan - I'm not into plastic claws - they're a bit yuk in my opinion - but it is lovely to be able to know your hands are nice and nobody cringes as they put your change into your hand in the shops!
