  • If you are buying the Ipod touch I would wait because they are bringing out a new one soon. I have the Ipod touch 3 and love it I am just waiting for the new one to come out so that I can update.

Installing apps from the App Store is an easy and reliable process in all my experience. If you are non-techy, buy one (Touch or iPad) and enjoy!

However if you are techy and want to use your Touch as a tool for, say diagnosing WiFi problems around the house, you're stuffed unless you jailbreak. Pity, I love my Touch but having discovered the walled garden limitations like this, and Apple's fairly determined efforts to prevent Jailbreaking, I would get an Android equivalent next time.

Not techy in the slightest
hence asking the very basic questions, just something for OH birthday, which would allow him to check score updates and other football related apps that i am sure he would find.

    thanks for the comments

One of the first posters has also told me this, OH birthday end of sept, so will wait, he can get a weekend away and an IOU for the ipod touch.

    thank you

Is it a problem having to use itune store for apps ? :(
Also with the software updates, do the cause problems ? :(

    many thanks
The store is poorly laid out and it can be hard to find things unless you know specifically what you are looking for. Software updates invariably result in the Touch being fried and unlike other computers (which is what the Touch is) recovering to the previous state can be a major PITA even if savvy with computers - the last two software updates resulted in 8 hours of work on each occasion just to get everything reloaded plus another few hours getting it in the right place. Even then I found that some items had disappeared and had to be repurchased or recovred from other source

My advice is NOT to use a PC with iTunes but to directly load to the Touch from the itunes store

As i am not very technical, I take it to use a pc with the ipod touch it would be connected via a usb cable ?

to directly load the touch from the itunes store is this done via wireless connection ?

    thanks

I find the App Store (on iPhone/iPad) easy to use - if you know the name of the app you want you just type the name of the app in the search box, and if you don't want a specific app you can just browse categories.

Are you talking about buying things on iTunes on a PC then using the sync process to transfer the app to the iPod? I have never tried doing that, I can't see why anyone would want to. Just buy the app on the App Store on the iPod.

In my experience, operating system updates are simple (but not quick, if you include the time required to back up the iPad/iPhone/iPod beforehand). I've never fried my iPad or iPhone when updating them.

OP, the iPod will come with a cable to connect it to a PC (yes via a USB port). Yes you will need a wireless connection if you want your iPod Touch to connect to the internet (to buy things from the App Store directly, for example).
  • You don't have to use the iTunes store if you don't want to :)
Get Appletv2 & XBMC in and thank me later

The worst aspect of the ipod Touch is that it means having to deal with the itune store if you want apps. It also means having to perform software updates which invariably fail leaving the Touch totally fooked unless you are willing to spend several hours un!!!!!!! it or spend time at an Apple store.

Apart from those problems the Touch is a wonderful bit of kit - but don't go for the 8GB version, go for a 32GB version at least as it's impossible to add capacity to it.

I wonder why you have so many problems installing a simple software update.

Millions of people manage it without a problem.

Yes, software management is easy peasy on iPad... managing your content eg music, video etc, is NOT.

I use Mediamonkey for that - once you get used to it, can do anthing free of Apple shackles even if not Jailbroken.

Also can use the inbuilt Apple Pocasts app for occarional manual updating of favourite Podcasts, plus the free "Downloads Lite" App to be able to download and play things like you can on Windows.
